Unlock the Power of Storytelling in Service Design

Unlock the Power of Storytelling in Service Design

I've always been fascinated by the way stories can bring people together to create memorable experiences. Recently, I read a post by Jeremy Connell-Waite that revealed 12 storytelling structures. I picked the most suitable 8 and 4 of them are quite suitable for Props, People and Processes (the link to the original post incl. the free PDF is at the end of this article). Let me know what you think!

Props

The Scientific Method to the Pyramid Principle (Barbara Minto), these props help us to present unbiased, data-driven stories and simplify complex information for busy executives.

People

Hero's Journey (Joseph Campbell or Christopher Vogler), to craft epic tales of organizational transformation that resonate with our heroes.

Processes

The Story Circle (Dan Harmon), to create a narrative that unfolds across multiple touch points.

And of course there is more:

  • Sparkline (Nancy Duarte) for keynotes
  • Mission Critical Script (Jeremy) for CXO conversations & short pitches
  • Save the Cat (Blake Snyder) for structuring workshop or seminar agendas
  • Pyramid (Gustav Freytag) for stories of personal leadership

A Big Thank You! (updated)

Huge thanks to Jeremy Connell-Waite for breaking down these complex storytelling structures into an easy-to-understand summary. I also want to acknowledge the foundational work that this builds upon, specifically “The Pillars of Story Structure” by Prof. Peter von Stackelberg (2023) and Ian Bousher "Narrative Structure" here you will find his post incl. the link to his PDF ( keeping this former reference >>“Storytelling Frameworks” by Prof. Lennart Nacke (2024) to make the comment of Lennart below the post understandable). The result of your work has inspired me to experiment with new ways of storytelling.

Happy storytelling!

That storytelling framework sounds killer for service design. Making info relatable is the way to go. What's your favorite method from that list?
