Unlock the power of accessibility in design: Is your content truly inclusive?

When was the last time you thought about how accessible your content really is? Sadly, for many organisations, accessibility is an afterthought - or worse, not considered at all. But in a world where over 15% of the population experiences some form of disability, this approach excludes millions of potential users. Here’s the hard truth: inaccessible design isn’t just a missed opportunity - it’s an active barrier. By failing to design with accessibility in mind, you risk alienating customers, frustrating learners, and creating unnecessary obstacles.
On Thursday 23rd January 2025, join us at 12 pm UK time for a free webinar, Understanding digital accessibility: best practices and guidelines. This session is your opportunity to learn how to design and deliver digital content that’s not just functional but accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities.
Why does accessibility matter?
Imagine opening a website and not being able to read the text because of poor colour contrast. Or trying to navigate a form that doesn’t work with a screen reader. These are everyday challenges for people with disabilities. Every decision in design can either remove a barrier - or create one! Poor colour contrast, non-descriptive links, or forms that are impossible to navigate without a mouse aren’t just inconveniences - they’re barriers that exclude potential customers, learners, or users; as real as any physical wall making it impossible or very difficult to get around.
Accessibility isn’t just about addressing the needs of people with disabilities - it’s about improving the experience for everyone. Simple changes like clear navigation, better contrast, or readable fonts can make your digital content more user-friendly for all. In fact, accessible design is good design. So much so that many innovations we take for granted today were originally designed with accessibility in mind. For example:
Beyond the practical benefits, accessibility is also a legal and ethical responsibility. Laws like the UK Equality Act 2010, ADA Section 508, and the European Accessibility Act require organisations to make “reasonable adjustments” to accommodate people with disabilities. Failing to do so risks not only legal consequences but also reputational damage.
That said, it shouldn't come down to compliance, it's just morally and ethically right thing to do. When you invest in accessible design, you’re not just meeting legal obligations; you’re ensuring your digital platforms are usable, efficient, and enjoyable for all.
