Whenever we talk about professional growth, several buzzwords come to the fore – one of the most popular being ‘Networking’. What are these networks? How do we build one? Why are they important? While it is a seemingly simple word, it is equally nuanced. And recently, I had an interesting opportunity to unlayer it to a great extent over a thoughtful panel discussion themed ‘Unlock networks’.

Connecting with people has been an intrinsic part, or rather, a way of life for me, ever since my childhood. As we delved deeper into the significance of communities and networking during the session, I instantly found myself reflecting on my own experiences. Many of us may not consciously realize it but the motivation to nurture networks draws on our upbringing where, though subtly, we were encouraged to engage with our community, inadvertently teaching us the art of building social connections.

Coming back to the current ecosystem, I view this from a threefold perspective:

1. Need: Humans possess an innate instinct and a passionate yearning to socialize.

2. Influence: Whether big or small, everyone wants to build a circle of influence.

3. Purpose: In addition to our individual beliefs, our connections help us discover a deeper perspective and purpose.

So, what does it take to build one? To begin with, mindset. Networking is a long-term investment, similar to financial investments – stay committed. Start early to establish credibility and remember that networking isn't just about seeking help; it's also about giving and adding value, as this is crucial for building trust. Just like you are in it for a reason, you need to build that edge for others too. Let’s look at some other aspects too:

Do not stay cocooned:

Imagine consuming the same family of foods each day! Extend your connections beyond your industry, and even when meeting someone professionally, take the time to get to know them on a personal level – show genuine interest. You can also consider volunteering in different communities; it not only increases your visibility but also provides valuable learning opportunities. Keep in mind that networking shouldn't be viewed with immediate returns in mind.

Positioning yourself is the key to sustain:

When engaging with others, introduce your uniqueness and interests, allow them to get to know and learn about you naturally. Avoid making it solely about your needs, as this can hinder genuine connections. Be participative. If you're not naturally inclined to engage in discussions, start by asking intriguing questions to gain knowledge. Most people enjoy talking and sharing information. Cultivate curiosity and seek out similarities to foster familiarity.

Break boundaries and barriers with virtual networks:

Over time, communities have evolved, and we now have the privilege of virtual communities. The shift from physical communities and networking to the evolution of virtual communities represents a transformative societal change. In the past, physical communities thrived as the primary interface for social interaction and networking. People lived, worked, and socialized in close proximity, fostering deep interpersonal connections.

However, with the advent of technology and the internet, the concept of community and networking has undergone a paradigm shift. Virtual communities have emerged as powerful alternatives. These online spaces break down geographical boundaries, enabling individuals to connect, collaborate, and share experiences regardless of their physical location.

Virtual communities offer several advantages like 24/7 accessibility, ease of connect, global outreach, fostering diversity, and more. Can you take a step back and imagine our fight with COVID without virtual networks? Well, it’s almost unimaginable. ?

However, like every platform, one needs to watch out for authenticity, privacy and other concerns. Some might argue that virtual communities lack the depth and emotional richness that physical presence provides. So, what does one do? The answer is to leverage the best of the two worlds. While physical communities continue to hold importance, virtual communities have become essential tools for personal, professional, and social growth in our increasingly digital age.

In today's globalized world, the key lies in harnessing both virtual and non-virtual communities to build a diverse and robust network, fostering valuable relationships for personal and professional growth.
