The so-called experts don't want you to know that:
- How you negotiate in a high-stakes conversation results from habituated patterns.?Making requests,?engaging in?conversations, and reaching agreements are daily routine activities. We do it while deciding who's going to take out the garbage this week and while facilitating the recurring project scoping meeting at work. These practiced patterns can?either?snowball into confidence or anxiety when you negotiate salary or a business merger or acquisition.
- Negotiating with your integrity and authenticity intact can be SIMPLE. It never has to feel as though you're getting twisted into a pretzel to engage in a conversation that could lead to agreement. The next move that's right for you will feel doable, not insurmountable.
- No one is born a gifted negotiator, just like no one is born a gold medal-winning Olympian. But you absolutely can use the same tools Olympians use to fortify your skill and confidence ahead of a negotiation.
Until now, secrets have protected the privileged few. Secrets be damned.
What we need now is more women, more minorities, and more capable folks who'd been historically sidelined due to injustices speaking their desires, claiming their value, and negotiating with aplomb.
This is the work we do inside my 1:1 coaching series. (Click here for details: https://www.jamieleecoach.com/apply)
Here's what my clients do:
- Ask for the?VP?position and $250K+ salary and GET?BOTH without giving into pushback?
- Negotiate maternity leave policy AND delegate to ensure the international assignments get done while both you and a direct report are away on?leave
- Secure $20 million funding as a rookie Managing Director of a financial services firm
If you're wondering, "But how would coaching help me negotiate better?"
Let me walk you through a session I just wrapped up with two female co-founders of a startup negotiating with a big player in their field.
They started the session frustrated that their negotiation counterpart wouldn't listen. They ended the session crystal clear on their next steps, feeling calm and confident.
Here's how the three steps applied to them:
- Interrupt the habituated pattern of second-guessing your wants. Gender socialization holds smart, competent women back from clearly and unequivocally stating our wants, because we're conditioned to think that other people's opinions of us matter more than what we want. Women clients routinely tell me, "I can't just say what I want, because then they'll think I'm being too demanding and unreasonable, even though inside I'm angry at the impossible demands THEY are making." We flipped this analysis-paralysis-inducing narrative on its head and got prepared to meet impossible demands with clearly and thoughtfully articulated demands of our own.
- Create an actionable plan that is simply doable and aligned with core values. In coaching, I guided the two cofounders to clarify the startup's core value: equality. This resulted in clarifying the what and why of their non-negotiable, or deal-breaker. This meant they could walk away from the deal with their head held high. Which meant they had more leverage than they first realized. With growing confidence, they became clear on how to verbally communicate their wants.
- Do what Olympians do to win gold medals.?We wrapped up the session with a brain-state-shifting tool that 5X's the impact of your efforts and strengthens your "game:" mental rehearsal. This is what Michael Phelps routinely does, as can you. At the end of this 5-minute exercise, my clients felt so confident about their next steps they said,?"It's?time to pop the champagne!"?
