Black Jobs: Empowering Black and Hispanic Students to Dream Beyond Stereotypes
Dear Friends,
I'm Roxanne Kemp, PhD, the President and Founder of Ebed-Melech University. Recent comments by former President Trump about "Black jobs" and "Hispanic jobs" have sparked widespread discussion and concern. These comments, while controversial, highlight an enduring issue: the stereotypes surrounding the types of work deemed appropriate for Blacks and Hispanics.
I recall a personal experience that underscores this issue. Years ago, while dining at Taco Cabana, I met a young Black woman I had previously advised about her academic career. She introduced me to her adorable 6-year-old daughter, who reminded her of me with her dark skin and big brown eyes. As I conversed with the little girl, she told me she wanted to be a "witch" and then a "butterfly" when she grew up. I encouraged her to dream bigger and envision herself in various roles, sparking a light in her eyes.
Similarly, at college fairs, I have often encountered Brown teenagers interested in traditional fields like nursing or trades, surprised when I introduced them to careers in cybersecurity or business. These experiences reinforced my belief that we need to change the narrative about what we can achieve as Black and Hispanic individuals. We must pursue our dreams without fear and empower others to do the same.
Starting a university was a bold step, one that many of my peers doubted. They suggested I work at an existing university instead. But what if my dream was to create something new? I want to inspire others to dream big and explore their potential because when we find our true calling, it doesn't feel like work at all.
What can we do to change the narrative and empower our communities? What are you willing to do to support this cause? We can start by pouring our knowledge, resources, and encouragement into the lives of young people. We can mentor, teach, and provide opportunities that broaden their horizons. It’s about showing them that their potential is limitless and that they can achieve greatness in any field they choose.
At Ebed-Melech University, we are committed to this mission. We believe in nurturing dreams and turning them into reality. By supporting education and providing scholarships, we can remove financial barriers that often limit opportunities for Black and Hispanic students. We can inspire them to pursue careers in fields where they are underrepresented and to become leaders who will make a difference.

4 个月Thank you for this Dr. Kemp. I think it is important to interact with and learn from people who are different from you. For example back in 2000 one of my colleagues offered for us to meet at Starbucks. I use to get my coffee from quick trip and then I discovered a whole new culture of coffee drinkers. I been ordering the same drink since 2000, meeting there doing homework but it took me outside of my quick trip coffee experience and I also feel like it put me at a new level of socializing. Now mind you this Starbucks example might not be for everyone but it did have me engaging in an environment that I was not accustomed too.
