Nowadays the battery energy storage system (BESS) plays a crucial role in ensuring consistent power supply for utilities, businesses and residences worldwide. By enabling energy storage from multiple sources for later use, BESS can achieve renewable energy integration, grid stabilization, peak shaving and backup power supply. However, it also faces challenges, such as high upfront investment, durability and safety concerns, energy conversion losses and complex maintenance, etc.
Particularly for some remote industrial scenarios, outdoor BESS can be subjected to more challenges and limitations due to poor grids, harsh environments combined with large instantaneous loads, like heavy electric construction vehicles and mining equipment. To address all, Infypower has introduced the fully liquid cooled battery energy storage solution, employing revolutionary liquid cooling technology for both the battery packs and the power conversion system (PCS). Liquid cooling is becoming mainstreamed for next-generation batteries. Compared with air cooling, it can not only ensure lower cell temperature but also secure more uniform cell temperature, ultimately extending battery service life, cutting investment and shortening payback period.
Unlike most liquid cooling technology, Infypower maintains precise cell-level temperature control and ensures that battery cells are surrounded by the S-shaped liquid cooled tubes, achieving 6 times larger cooling surface. By this approach, it can constantly keep the cell temperature rise within 5℃ and cell temperature difference within 2℃. From the system level, the overall temperature difference of the entire cabinet is carefully controlled within 3.5℃ with the help of energy-efficient water-cooled air conditioner. The BESS takes four-level fire safety precautions, starting from precise alarming (audible and visual alarm, smoke sensor, flammable gas detector and water-immersion detector), deflagration isolation (sidewall heat insulation), timely fire suppression (aerosol module and perfluoroacetone fire suppression unit) to final safety ensuring. Plus, through real-time monitoring of various operating parameters, such as cell voltage, temperature, internal resistance and equalization as well as hazardous particles and gases, it is expected to stop BESS go into thermal runaway. Thermal runaway is one of the most dangerous BESS failures. It’s an uncontrolled exothermic chemical reaction that increases cell temperature, can propagate to adjacent cells, leading to off-gassing, ignition then fire or explosion.
Meanwhile, the matching PCS of the BESS innovatively adopts liquid cooling and full SiC design, achieving enhanced heat dissipation and higher power conversion efficiency by 2%. With completely sealed enclosure and internal high frequency transformer isolation, it provides unrivalled protection and reliability in various extreme environments, such as deserts, coastal areas and remote islands. Through full-stack independent R&D of all key components, this BESS enables fast and seamless all in one deployment and transportation from one site to another. To simplify maintenance, it allows hassle-free replacing of battery packs with self-locking and leak-proof liquid tubes.
