Many leaders know delegation is a crucial skill that enables them to focus on strategic priorities and drive team success.
However, they struggle with delegation, leading them to take on too many day-to-day tasks that take time and focus away from more impactful, “big picture” tasks.
In today’s newsletter, I’ll explore the core reason why leaders are so hesitant to delegate and how applying coaching principles can finally unlock your ability to effective delegation, leading to more effective and empowered teams.
Why Are Leaders Hesitant to Delegate?
Many leaders face common challenges when it comes to delegation. Have you ever caught yourself thinking,
? It would be easier for me to do myself
? My team isn’t capable enough
? It will take too much time to explain
? I can do it better and faster
What do all of these thoughts have in common?
They all stem from a lack of trust in your team’s abilities.
In reality, your team members are likely more capable than you might believe, especially with the right support and guidance.
The Real Issue Isn’t Your Team—It’s Your Mindset
There’s the old saying “you won’t know if you never try.”
Likewise, you won’t know the true talents and abilities of your team members if you never try giving them more challenging tasks through delegation.
Yes, some team members may not be where they need to be yet, everyone needs to start somewhere. But if you don’t give them the benefit of the doubt, you take away the chance to see where there skills truly are as well as their opportunity to grow.
As your team develops their skills, you also grow by freeing up time for strategic work and developing your helicopter view of your organization.
At the end of the day, the real problem isn’t your team’s capability—it’s your mindset.

How to Delegate Effectively Using Coaching Principles
Leaders, are you ready to start delegating tasks to your team members? Good.
Start by integrating the following coaching principles into your delegation strategy.

Coaching Principle 1: Understanding And Leveraging Strengths
Align tasks with the strengths and aspirations of each team member.
By taking the time to understand your team members unique abilities and career goals, you set them up for success and provide opportunities for their growth.

Coaching Principle 2: Supporting Development
Equip your team with the necessary tools, information, and support to ensure their success.
By providing the necessary resources and guidance, you’ll empower your team members to finish your task successfully, thereby helping them develop their skills and confidence for future delegated tasks.

Coaching Principle 3: Promoting Self-Reliance
When a team member approaches a task differently than you might, don’t immediately jump in to take over. Encourage team members to take ownership of their tasks and find their own solutions.
This fosters self-reliance and creativity, allowing them to learn and grow through their experiences.

Coaching Principle 4: Positive Reinforcement
Acknowledge and celebrate achievements, no matter how small. Even trying a new task should be positively acknowledged.
Positive reinforcement boosts motivation and confidence, reinforcing the behaviours and attitudes you want to see in your team.

Mistakes happen. We all make them. But rather than focusing on what went “wrong,” view mistakes as learning opportunities.
Apply a growth mindset by reflecting on what can be improved and adapting your approach to support continuous development and resilience.
Final Considerations
Effective delegation goes beyond simply assigning tasks— it requires you to change your mindset around delegation.
By applying these coaching principles, you not only enhance your delegation practices but also support your team’s growth and development.
Focus on leveraging strengths, supporting development, promoting self-reliance, reinforcing positive behaviours, and embracing a growth mindset.
