Unlike green cars, green boats are green?

Unlike green cars, green boats are green?

It has been widely and scientifically demonstrated that green cars are not green. Not by me! So please don’t blame me. At the end of the day what counts is the overall emissions generated by designing, building and operating cars which counts for assessing a car as green. It appears they are NOT!

Whatever we agree or disagree, this is what has been reported.

Green boats are green! This is what has been reported!

However, again it is not by me. The matter is what is the definition of green boat?

Indeed advertising green boats such as yachts, superyachts, shuttles, ferries, work boats and so, it is one of the most amusing activities of the boat builders and designers.

Yeah, it looks nice and fashionable, I have on the market a “green boat”. Just give me a call and I will sell to you. This is what some of them advertise.

On the other side, I have heard that some boat builders, even big ones, don’t want to make such “experimentation “ !

What experimentation are they talking about? Green boat technologies are widely available on the market such as materials, paintings, batteries, electric or hybrid propulsion, and any other smaller details.

Can boats be green because technologies are there?

Definitely NOT.

It is not because you assemble technologies that boats will be green.

Boats can become green if the design, the building and the operation has been planned to be green.

Contrary to the green car that sells a “tag”, the green boat can seriously be green if proper know and experience is used in planning and building.

The achievement of marketable green boat is not an experiment at all, it is the results of a sound approach to the boat lifecycle by minimizing the risk of negative environmental impact of the boat.

Several of them have so far been realized by my team, we never looked or applied for green tags or certification, they are green because knowhow, experience has been applied.

So when you are seriously considering a green boat, either as a buyer, a designer, a builder, a reseller, please make up your mind, this is a serious ongoing revolution and you shall join the revolutionaries people to achieve it.

I believe the premise to this article is incorrect... "sustainable" boats should be much more BLUE than green. It is not just a question of CO2 emissions for air (or EOL recyclability), but multidimensional impact to water and air (since water absorbs over 53% of CO2 from the air) considering "acquatrail" of gases, liquids AND solids, as well as social/use considerations such as impact to sealife, safety, and awareness. Eco-composite substitutes for fiberglass, eco-comaptible anti-fouling and other anti-corrosive coatings- especially for metals and woods, cleaning materials, etc. Boats should aspire to be BLUE not green.
