Becoming an effective leader doesn't involve conforming to predetermined molds or following prescriptive scripts; rather, it involves embarking on a journey - an internal exploration that ultimately defines your unique approach to leadership. With conventional leadership models increasingly under scrutiny and being now redefined, authenticity emerges as key for effective leadership; its roots lie deep within each life story and all of its successes, failures and lessons learnt along the way.
Authenticity: Your Leadership Blueprint
As leaders, it 's necessary for us to use these experiences and strengths to craft an authentic leadership model.
Douglas Conant , former CEO of Campbell Soup and author of "The Blueprint," asserts that many leadership challenges today stem from compartmentalization. Leaders create artificial barriers between their professional and personal lives resulting in tension-filled dual identities and unnecessary conflicts between personal and professional lives.
Conant suggests, and I wholeheartedly agree, that it's time for a change. It's time for our life story to become the bedrock of our leadership story.
Integrating Personal and Professional Selves
True leadership goes well beyond simply following someone else's style or adhering to an immutable formula. Instead, it involves recognizing and applying your unique set of talents and experiences - it requires connecting personal and professional identities into one coherent image that exudes authenticity.
My journey towards an authentic leadership model was profoundly transformative for me; Doug Conant's Blueprint Bootcamp provided the impetus. While creating my unique leadership framework, an awakening occurred: I wasn't living up to the leader I have the potential to be and I aspire to be.
My actions weren't aligned with my values, and they failed to authentically mirror all the experiences that had formed me into the leader I am today. Recognizing the necessity of change, I willingly accepted the challenge of reconciling who I really was with the image presented to others as leader.
Undergoing a major transformation in your leadership approach can mark a turning point in your career. Such transformations often necessitate confronting and reconciling any discrepancies between actions, values and experiences which have formed you; taking up the challenge to bridge that divide between who you truly are and the image projected out to others.
A Framework for Authentic Leadership
Every leader's journey starts with understanding their leadership story as part of their life narrative. Drawing inspiration from experiences that shaped us and using these memories as building blocks towards becoming the authentic leaders we aspire to become is at the core of authentic leadership - something the Blueprint framework facilitates by helping each leader unlock their full potential.
I highly suggest exploring Doug Conant's work, particularly his book "The Blueprint," or, if possible, attending his transformative bootcamp. However, if these options aren't readily accessible to you, you can still make a start towards self-discovery and authentic leadership.

For your reference, I'd like to share the leadership model I designed during my time at the Blueprint Bootcamp. This model is a direct reflection of my personal leadership style and has been shaped by my unique experiences as a musician. The profound influence that music has had on my life and journey towards my goals is deeply embedded in this model.
My leadership model hinges on the TEAM concept, much like a symphony. Within every symphony, there are highly skilled performers, each meticulously chosen for their unique talents. The conductor, in this metaphor, is tasked with transforming the composer's vision, initially just symbols on a page, into resonating music. To accomplish this, they thoroughly familiarize themselves with the composition and find ways to help the performers understand it, as each performer only sees their individual parts. Despite the conductor's comprehensive understanding of the piece, they can't create the music alone. The conductor relies on the performers to bring the piece to life. The performers, in turn, anticipate passion and dedication from the conductor, which they reciprocate with hard work and commitment.
The conductor fuels a sense of purpose and inspiration in the performers, encouraging them to take responsibility for their roles with the trust that they will come prepared to collaborate as a team. During rehearsals, the conductor gives feedback, corrects mistakes, guides the ensemble, and fosters unity. By providing honest feedback and guidance, the conductor helps the performers grow and improve.
Through these interactions between the conductor and performers, a team is formed. The conductor sets the stage for the performers to excel, and the performers master their roles knowing that their contributions will form a united whole. While each performer is talented in their own right, it's the blending of their sounds, emotions, passion, and purpose that creates true mastery.
When a symphony transforms into a TEAM, each member brings their best to the performance, feeling empowered to own their roles, acknowledged for their contributions, and motivated to showcase their individual talents. The result is a world-class performance.
