last week I had a burst of courage and here it is: my 2nd LinkedIn newsletter. I write about leadership and career from a female perspective on my journey to support DEI with coaching and training. Let′s get started:
Have you ever found yourself on the receiving end of criticism? It's an experience that most of us can relate to. But how do you handle it when others pass judgment on you or when your own inner critic takes the reins?
If you're like many people, you might feel personally attacked and take criticism to heart. This often leads to defensive reactions, launching counterattacks, or even withdrawing altogether. But what if there was a simpler way? What if we could reframe our perspective and view criticism as an opportunity for growth?
Here are three tips to help you shift your mindset and transform how you respond to criticism:
1?? Separate Yourself: Remember that criticism is not a reflection of your entire being. It's essential to detach yourself from the feedback and understand that it's targeted at your actions, words, or decisions—not your worth as a person. By depersonalizing criticism, you create space for objective reflection and growth.
2?? Breathe and Reflect: Instead of reacting impulsively, take a moment to pause and breathe deeply. Allow yourself to process the feedback and consider its validity. Reflect on whether there are any lessons or insights to be gained from the criticism. This intentional pause can help you respond with composure and clarity.
3?? Respond with Grace: Responding to criticism with grace and composure is a powerful skill. Instead of becoming defensive or engaging in a confrontation, choose a constructive approach. Seek to understand the perspective of the critic and engage in a meaningful dialogue. This demonstrates your openness to growth and fosters a collaborative environment.

???Unveiling the Truth Behind Underperformers: Digging Deeper
Welcome to June, the time when many companies conduct midyear reviews. Today, I want to share an intriguing story that sheds light on a common misconception.
Recently, I had a conversation with a manager who had just welcomed a new team member from another department. This individual came with a reputation for being an underperformer. Curious about their progress, I later asked the manager how things were going. To my surprise, the manager praised the new colleague, noting their initiative and active involvement. It left us both puzzled as to why this person had struggled in their previous role.
This encounter reinforced my belief that labeling someone as an underperformer can be misleading and unfair. I refuse to accept the notion that individuals are inherently lazy or incompetent. I firmly believe that there is more to the story.
Yes, there are cases where employees have mentally checked out and are merely going through the motions. However, in most instances, there are underlying factors contributing to their dissatisfaction and lackluster performance.
Perhaps the person's current role doesn't allow them to leverage their strengths effectively, or it simply doesn't align with their personality. It could also be a matter of insufficient knowledge and experience, unclear expectations, or an overwhelming workload. The reasons behind subpar performance are diverse and multifaceted.
As you can see, there is a myriad of factors that can hinder employees from delivering their best results. But let's shift our perspective: Instead of branding them as underperformers, it is our responsibility as managers to create an environment that enables our team members to excel. We hold the power to shape the framework within which they operate. By shifting the focus away from labeling individuals, we can embrace our role in fostering their success.
So, the next time you encounter a team member struggling to meet expectations, resist the temptation to classify them as an underperformer. Instead, look inward and explore how you can enhance the conditions for their growth and achievement. As leaders, it is our duty to nurture and support our teams, cultivating an atmosphere where everyone can thrive.
Let's redefine our approach and dismantle the concept of underperformers. It's time to acknowledge our accountability and empower our people to reach their full potential. Together, we can create a workplace that fosters growth, excellence, and true success.
