Unleashing Your Inner Fearless Leader: The Power of the Do-Have-Be and Be-Do-Have Cycle
Day - ?? Transformational Tuesday?
"In order to HAVE what you want, you have to BE the person first, stepping into that identity, so you can create it."?- Dr. Eric Goodman
Do you ever feel like your life is a series of?to?do's??
As the cliché goes, we are notoriously "human doings." We are action-oriented, constantly evaluating ourselves based on our productivity and achievements. However, in the Do-Have-Be orientation, we often find ourselves questioning our worth and success solely based on our actions.??
?
?????The "Do-Have-Be" mindset: This orientation suggests that we must first take action (Do) to achieve certain outcomes (Have), which then leads to the development of our identity (Be).??
?
???The "Be-Do-Have" mindset: This alternative approach emphasizes that we must first cultivate our desired identity (Be) through self-reflection and growth, which in turn motivates us to take aligned actions (Do) and attain desired results (Have).?
By understanding these cycles and reflecting upon our own beliefs and aspirations, we can unlock our true potential and make conscious choices that align with our authentic selves.?
?
?? Imagine a life where we are clear about who we are and what's truly important to us, making choices that align with our authentic selves. By adopting the Be-Do-Have Model, we can break free from the constant pursuit of to-do lists and external validations, and instead, focus on a solid foundation that reflects our being.??
?
Let's explore how the Be-Do-Have Model can transform you into a fearless leader:?
???BE FEARLESS:?Embrace your true leadership potential by asking yourself:?
???DO WITH PURPOSE:?Align your actions with your authentic self and purpose:?
???HAVE LASTING IMPACT:?Evaluate the outcomes of your leadership:?
Regardless of the outcomes, we gain something from our actions—it may go beyond something material and include a tangible result or a feeling. It's essential to evaluate these outcomes and decide whether to continue on the same path, make adjustments, or explore new directions. Through self-reflection and analysis, we can identify what worked and what needs tweaking.?
?
??In our society, it's easy to become consumed by the ladder of career success, relentlessly climbing towards the next promotion or acquiring more wealth.?Many of us have embraced the idea that we have to "Do" certain things to "Have" things so we can "Be" someone. We often measure our worth by external markers of achievement. However, this pursuit can lead us to realize that the ladder we've climbed may be leaning against the wrong wall.??
?
???When leaders prioritize the "Be" aspect of the cycle not only for themselves, but also for their organization (i.e. defining the purpose, values, and principles that guide their organization), they create a culture of empowerment and growth. An organization that embraces the Be-Do-Have model thrives by fostering innovation, collaboration, and meaningful contributions from its members.??

?? Imagine an organization that rises above traditional metrics and focuses on making a positive difference in the world. By embodying a clear sense of purpose, defining core values, and upholding guiding principles, such an organization becomes a beacon of inspiration and attracts talented individuals who share its vision. Together, they create a culture that values growth, resilience, and compassion. ?

???????Life often presents us with reminders of what truly matters. As I reflect on recent experiences, I'm reminded that possessions (the "Have") and the pursuit of external achievements?pale in comparison to who we are and the value of our lives. Some of the recent challenges included a tornado that destroyed the home of a distant relative, a recent hailstorm (of golf-ball sized proportions) that damaged our home and several vehicles only to be followed by another unexpected thing this past weekend when my daughter's parked car was side-swiped in a parking lot (with the driver responsible fleeing the scene, leaving no note or any sign of accountability). These were important?reminders that life's challenges can strike unexpectedly.??While nothing is inherently good or bad, it is our thinking that creates our reality. These events were?a stark reminder to me of the transitory nature of material possessions and the importance of focusing on our true essence. ?
I often reflect on something that I wrote about in a past article,?Viktor Frankl's ?powerful words, "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances."?I invite you to embrace?Frankl's wisdom—that true fulfillment and freedom come from the choices we make and the attitudes we cultivate, not the external circumstances or possessions we acquire.??
?
When we prioritize our values, purpose, and guiding principles, we can navigate the challenges of life with resilience and grace. Instead of being defined by material possessions, we become leaders who inspire others through our attitudes, choices, and actions. We foster environments of empathy, growth, and collaboration. We create lasting impact beyond the superficial.
When adverse circumstances happen rather than succumbing to despair or anger, you can BE the person and leader you want to be and embrace that identity to drive your new behaviors like recognizing the importance of collaboration and empathy —bringing people together, offering support, and fostering resilience in the face of adversity.?
?
The Do-Have-Be and Be-Do-Have cycles offer a transformative alternative and powerful reminder. By shifting our focus from the pursuit of possessions and external validation to the exploration of who we want to be at our core, we can align our actions with our authentic selves and discover a path of true fulfillment and purpose.?
As we reflect on this model:
Let us remember that the true measure of our worth lies in who we are, not what we have.
Let us embrace the power of choice—the power to choose our attitude, values, and purpose—regardless of the circumstances that befall us.
Let us elevate our focus from the external to the internal, from material possessions to meaningful relationships and personal growth.
By doing so, we can truly unleash our inner fearless leader.??Together, let's build a life and organizational culture that celebrates authenticity, empathy, and personal growth. ??Remember that happiness and satisfaction in work and life arise from aligning our actions with our authentic selves and what truly matters to us.
