This edition is a little bit different. We're not talking about pricing, numbers, and what not. Today, we just give you a bit of a taste into why we chose the word "grok" for the "Grok Value and Pricing" newsletter. Many people don't typically use or see the word grok - I, for one, completely forget where it originated from, even though I've read the book where it was first coined.
Without further ado, I'm here to also announce a great (and new!) resource we've just added to our Downloadable Tools page - please welcome the Pricing & Value Diagnostic Checklist. The aim is to help you perform a quick diagnostic of your pricing performance and process and take corrective action. So, diagnose away.
In the dynamic world of customer value and pricing, finding the right words to capture complex concepts can be a challenge. It can be difficult finding that perfect balance of written language without sounding too intellectual or too juvenile and unintelligent. Building on this, we introduced the word "grok" to our Grok Value and Pricing LinkedIn newsletter and some of you may actually remember the term coined by author Robert A. Heinlein (The Pupper Masters, Starship Troopers) way back in 1961 for his sci-fi classic “Stranger in a Strange Land”.
In this blog post, we explore the origins of this intriguing term and why it resonates with our mission to unlock the true power of understanding value and pricing.
Unpacking the Meaning of Grok
The term "grok" represents a deep level of comprehension and empathy (See: Critical Skills: Empathy). It goes beyond mere understanding and delves into a profound sense of connection and insight. “Grokking” is about absorbing knowledge at a visceral level, internalizing it, and integrating it into one's being. So basically, you could say “I grok value and pricing” or “Do you grok pricing?”
Over time, the term "grok" has been adopted by online hackers and the computer programming community to refer to a deep and intuitive understanding of a programming language, system, or problem.

Value and pricing are complex domains that require a deep understanding of customer needs, market dynamics, and competitive landscapes. Merely grasping the surface-level concepts is insufficient.
