Unleashing the Power of Self-Care: An Empowering Message for Diverse Corporate Women

In a dynamic corporate world often dominated by oppressive norms, it's not uncommon for women to find themselves feeling overwhelmed and marginalised.
Amid such adversity, self-care can be a transformative tool, offering a much-needed respite and an opportunity to rejuvenate.
However, to truly break free from the chains of oppression, we need to delve deeper into the concept of self-care, distinguishing the difference between self-care and radical self-care.
And, dispelling any myths that self-care is just 'new age' and only accessible for those who may be born in the Global North who can afford expensive self-care routines.
The Traditional Concept of Self-Care
Self-care, in its traditional sense, is a proactive approach to physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
It encourages us to invest time in activities that nourish our mind, body, and spirit.
This could be as simple as taking a warm bath, reading a good book, or even just taking a few moments to breathe deeply.
Which could be slightly offensive to those overcoming collective trauma!
Historically, the act of self-care has been associated with expensive spas, taking a holiday abroad or moving to one's second home in the countryside.
The socio-economic reality for many is that these options are simply not available.
Radical Self-Care: The Game Changer
While traditional self-care focuses on individual activities aimed at reducing stress and fostering well-being,
The self-care I grew up with was much more collective.
Helping me to understand my self-worth, recognise my potential, and grow in community.
It looked like going to visit family at the weekends, cooking and sharing delicious food, attending church and at a stretch a day out somewhere with a homemade picnic!
Radical self-care shifts this perspective to a broader more community level.
Radical self-care nourishes our souls and encourages transformative healing such as forgiveness and self-acceptance.
Radical self-care encourages us to confront societal expectations, question the norms that limit us, and dismantle the barriers that hold us back.
It's not just about taking a break; it's about breaking free!

It's also about making deep-seated changes in our lives, challenging oppressive structures, and asserting our right to thrive, not just survive.
Rights to equal opportunities, respect, and dignity.
The Critical Need for Radical Self-Care
Kinship ran its first-ever retreat. The Superwoman Sanctuary last week.
Embracing radical self-care is an empowering journey that goes beyond relaxation and rejuvenation; it's about dismantling oppressive structures, asserting our worth, and reclaiming our place not just in the corporate world, but within our own hearts and minds.
The idea of taking time for yourself in order to better take on systemic anti-Black racism, class inequality and political or environmental injustice gets lost sometimes!
Being the only person on your team or even in the whole entire organisation that looks like you can be?exhausting.
Investing in radical self-care empowers you to reclaim your place in the world. By prioritising your needs and well-being, we create space for healing and transformation.
It allows us to rise above oppressive norms, foster our professional growth, and assert our identity.
It empowers us to resist oppression, to challenge discrimination, and to strive for equality.
It's not just about caring for ourselves; it's about caring in and with community.
5 Practical Steps Towards Radical Self-Care
Embarking on the journey of radical self-care involves a few key steps to help alleviate stress, enhance our mood, and restore our energy, thus equipping us to face the challenges of the world with resilience:
We are individuals deserving of respect, growth, and fulfilment. So, let's rise above the oppression, prioritise our well-being, and pave the way for a better, more inclusive workplaces.
