Unleashing the Power of Persistent Idea Generation: Practice Makes Permanent

As a music lover with a creative spark, I picked up a big lesson on my journey. I used to believe "practice makes perfect." But, guess what? If you're practicing it wrong, you'll just make that mistake stick for good. So, it's not about practice making things perfect, it's more like practice makes permanent. Also, if you're always trying to hit that 'perfect' note, or writing that perfect article, or generating that perfect marketing piece, you might end up squashing your creativity. When you focus on being perfect all the time, it stymies creativity.

Idea generation isn't about scoring the perfect shot every time. It's about shooting again and again, building a muscle that can generate an abundant stream of thoughts, insights, and possibilities.

Let's envision this - you commit to developing 10 ideas every single day. Rain or shine, weekend or weekday, you stick to your promise. Over the course of a year, you'd generate an impressive 3,650 ideas!

Now, are all of these ideas going to be brilliant? Probably not. In fact, at the beginning of this journey, you might find that for every thousand ideas, only one stands out as truly great. But don't let that discourage you.

The idea is not to put pressure on yourself to come up with only 'good' ideas. Just like Tiger Woods doesn't expect a hole-in-one with every swing, you're in the practice phase.

I took an art class during my undergraduate studies. I'll never forget drawing live models and being asked by the instructor to "SWITCH!" We had to remove our paper from the large pad and start over every 45 seconds or so. I forced us to practice, practice, and practice without getting too attached to the drawing. The focus was on becoming the artist, versus drawing a drawing.

Keep in mind, it's not about practice making your posts perfect, your writing perfect, or getting your ideas for marketing perfect. It is about making your style consistent. It's all about fine-tuning your knack for coming up with cool ideas. So, when you're in a pinch and need a game-changer, you can trust in your creativity to pull you through

Stay consistent, stay creative, and let the ideas flow.

I like the idea of focus to add 10 and how huge that adds up over the year - even when you miss a few days, you're still generating tons of more focus, ideas, and practice.

"Practice makes permanent"......I wish that wasn't so true Tony, but a I have a number of bad habits that show otherwise. The good news though....practice can also make for change.

Great post, Tony. The fear of failing, and becoming discouraged when one doesn't find immediate success, is a major reason a lot of good ideas end up in the graveyard. The most effective innovators and experts in the world have gotten it wrong a million times, and they'd never have gotten to where they were without practice and persistence.
