LISTENING AS A COACH

Often, when we think of coaching, we picture the charismatic, energetic leader rallying their team with powerful words. But the essence of coaching, friends, is not just about speaking - it's about listening. Active, focused, and intense listening.

In the whirlwind of our daily lives, distractions abound. Emails, phone calls, constant interruptions. Yet, as coaches, we must strive to overcome these distractions to truly hear our team members.

Here are five strategies to transform your listening:

  1. Listen on a deeper level: Great coaches dig beneath the surface. They don't just want solutions, but the thought process that led to those solutions. Ask open-ended questions that spark conversation and reveal the broader context.
  2. Be patient: Listening requires discipline. Give your team members your undivided attention and resist the urge to jump in with advice or cut them off mid-sentence. Remember, their success is your success.

Feedback is a gift, my friends. It's a powerful tool to guide our team members on their journey of growth and development. Yet, many leaders struggle with giving feedback effectively.

Here are five guidelines to improve your feedback skills:

  1. Be specific: Provide concrete examples, focus on observable actions and facts, and link the behavior to a specific outcome. This makes your feedback meaningful and actionable.
  2. Be timely: Don't delay feedback. Whether it's to celebrate a win or to guide towards improvement, timely feedback shows that you're engaged and attentive.
  3. Be purposeful: Each piece of feedback should have a clear purpose aimed at helping the team member improve, grow, or develop. Frame your feedback in a way that is helpful and targeted.
  4. Be tactful: Deliver negative feedback with care, focusing on the behavior rather than the person. Choose your words carefully and use "I" statements to minimize defensiveness.
