Unleashing generative AI: Begin with the End in sight
Generative AI tools like #ChatGPT, #Copilot , #ClaudeAI (many others exist) are a game-changer in the right hands. They are a tool that, when wielded correctly, can provide amazing benefits for the user and their organisation.
However, many people aren't realizing its full potential because they are too focused on using it as a simple question-and-answer machine. There is no foolproof instruction manual for using any of the many AI tools out there. Instead, lots of people are self-learning or learning from others within their sphere. If those people are used to the simple search engine approach of asking simple questions, this will likely be the way they move forward with AI.
Unleash the Inner Creative
To get the best results, we need to use AI in a more complete way and allow it to unleash its creative capabilities. Don't just ask for answers—allow AI to understand the problem and provide a solution by giving it more information and context.
If we were looking at it from a project or change viewpoint, then I'd suggest starting by explaining the problem statement as a prompt.
Think Big: Focus on the End Goal
For example, if you're doing a market analysis, don't ask AI for individual salary comparisons or to tell you how many companies are hiring. That just gives you data that you still have to write up yourself.
Instead, prompt by building a picture of what you want:
1. Start by telling it who it is acting as, for this example maybe a recruiter in a specific organization.
2. Tell it what the task is, in this instance to write a full market review with detailed info on salaries, roles, and trends.
3. Tell it how to output the results, in this case formatted as a professional report.

4. Don't be afraid to follow up, suggesting tweaks and changes as needed.
This way, you will get a comprehensive output that aligns with your end goal.
Treat It Like a Human
Think about AI as a member of the team!
If you needed a report from one of the team, you could ask them lots of separate questions, using up their time and yours, and then ultimately end up asking them to compile all that information into a report anyway. Or, you can explain what you need upfront and trust them to deliver an output that you can use (your end goal) with hopefully only minor feedback and tweaks.
Conclusion
Focus on the end goal and telling your favourite AI assistant what you really want to achieve, or to coin a phrase from one of my favourite shows:
