Unleashing the Best Version of Ourselves: Lessons from Virat Kohli's Journey

Unleashing the Best Version of Ourselves: Lessons from Virat Kohli's Journey

"When I put my ego aside and surrendered to the situation, it felt like I was put in that zone, and the runs happened through me."- Virat Kohli

This humble admission from one of cricket's greatest players evoked a host of leadership insights for me. I am sharing these with you in this newsletter.

Virat's post-victory reflections were not at all about the technicalities of the game. He spoke about

1) Manifesting success

2) The necessity of bowing down in gratitude.

3) He spoke about emotions and the unforgettable moments.

4) He spoke of hugging Rohit Sharma and crying.

5) He was seen video calling his family from the field, making funny faces and flying kisses to his family.

6) He was seen dancing with abandon during the celebrations in Mumbai Wankhede Stadium

7) When he was being acknowledged - he called out for a shout out to bowler Jaspreet Bumrah who's bowling was instrumental to their win

For those who have followed Virat's journey over the past decade, it’s evident how much he has grown—not just as a player, but as a captain, a husband, a father, and a human being.

"I saw Rohit, he was crying, I was crying and we hugged!"

The Journey of Growth is bigger than the profession

Kohli’s evolution reminds us that the journey of growth is the ultimate endeavor, whether it’s pursued through cricket, comedy, finance, coaching, business, running, manufacturing, consulting, or politics. We all possess the potential to become the best versions of ourselves through our respective paths.

A poignant moment highlighting Kohli’s maturity was his gesture of handing the trophy to Coach Rahul Dravid. This act of humility and presence of mind acknowledged the significant role the coach played in their triumph. It was a moment that spoke volumes about Kohli's character and leadership.

The Essence of True Victory is beyond the Achievement

As a coach, I find myself captivated not by the technical prowess of players, but by their sportsmanship and emotional resilience. These unseen aspects are what truly define a champion. They are what enable teams to overcome insurmountable odds or conversely, succumb before the final whistle.

Consider Afghanistan’s victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup. What made this underdog team triumph against a powerhouse? It wasn’t just skill; it was the spirit and resilience of the players. The win is what shows. The true journey is unseen.

Leadership and the Power of Surrender

Prime Minister Modi, in his conversation with Kohli, remarked, “You have done Tapasya (dedicated practice) for many years, and that Tapasya came to your aid when you needed it most.” Kohli’s response was telling: "I had to keep my ego aside because the moment was so big, I surrendered to the moment and then it happened."

This insight is not limited to sports. Entrepreneurs, CEOs, and coaches must also continually set aside their egos to grow. Every new level of success requires us to shed the identity of the old level. We cannot rest on past laurels and expect continued success. In leadership, this means being open to learning, embracing humility, and recognizing the contributions of others. Being more humble as you achieve more, like the tree, that is laden with fruits, bends down a bit more.

The Infinite Game of Growth

Hardik Pandya was booed on the field by fans just a couple of months ago. His contribution to the team in crucial times was a resurrection of sorts. He was seen telling our prime minister - it was tough. But when i was booed i had decided i will let me game be my answer. I don't resonate much with him, but i acknowledge his ability to bounce back and show up consistently.

In sports, business, as in life, growth is an infinite game. We reach plateaus and must find new ways to break through. This often requires us to step out of our comfort zones, try new things, and sometimes face failure.

Are you in for the tournament or the game for life?

What keeps me grounded in this infinite game is returning to my basics—my WHY and my VALUES. When actions align with these core principles, there are no true failures, only lessons.

The other thing is showing up consistently. Each day is a new opportunity for growth and learning and living to the fullest.

Virat Kohli's journey and reflections offer invaluable lessons on humility, growth, and the power of surrender. Whether in sports, business, or life, these principles guide us to become the best versions of ourselves.

Which moment stayed with you the most? What were your takeaways?

I would love to hear from you.

Alpa Kapadia Teli, ICF PCC Coach I am so glad you made the time to write this. I have also seen Virat acknowledge and accept his flawed self over the years and use shortcomings and setbacks to fuel his success! He has kept an open mind, invested in his holistic development which has added to his brand value and given credit to all where due- his wife, team-mates, coaches. Leaders in all domains can learn so much by watching this one man in action.
