Mahabharata says that when the churning of Indo-Pacific ocean by the Devas (Gods, Angels) and Asuras (Daemons)- Samudra Manthan - done using the Mandhara mountain and Vasuki serpent as rope, in the Hindu month of Shravan, fourteen different types of rubies came out. Thirteen of these were distributed among the demons, except Halahal (deadly poison).
The story of the Churning of Ocean also symbolizes the spiritual trajectory of a person, trying to achieve self-realization by concentrating his mind, withdrawing sense controlling his desires and practicing meditation.
Let us decode the Samudra Mantham in a nutshell:

- The Mandara Moutain represents focusing Mind concentration in one direction to avoid distraction.
- Vishnu’s kurma Avatar- symbolizes the withdrawal of one’s senses. It symbolizes contemplation through meditation and concentration.
- Vasuki – the serpent king was used as the churning rope and it signifies the desire to attain the nectar of immortality. Its as if the Gods and Daemons churned their mind with rope of desire.
- The ocean of Milk: Is the collective human consciousness or the mind.
- The Halahal poison – Represents the suffering and pain that comes to the fore when once goes trough his own retrospection. As Angels and Daemons ( positives and Negatives ) churned the ocean of milk (mind) the nectar of immortality ( self -realization) with Mountain ( concentration ) resting on Vishnu’s Kurma avatar the object came out was Poison ( pain and sufferings)which had to be resolved for further progress – Shiva came to find solution to the problem – Shiva represents courage, compassion , willingness, simplicity , kindness and detachment.
