Unleash Your Dream Life

Unleash Your Dream Life

After delivering my keynote, "What if.... you burned it to the ground?" a highly accomplished professional in his early fifties came up to me and told me we needed to talk.

He admitted he was shaken by my topic and admitted it was hard to listen to me because there was so much of his life he needed to burn down to unleash himself into the life he dreamed of.

He had lived the life he was groomed to live by the influence of "shoulds" from family, mentors, and colleagues.

He had the spouse, house, kids, and outstanding career that he "should" have.

Along with those "shoulds" were wandering thoughts about "what if?"

"What if I walked away from this ..."

"What if I lived where I wanted to live..."

"What if I did what I really want to do..."

He told me that thinking about the "what ifs" was overwhelming and he found himself constantly yanked back to his present life by the "shoulds" he had subscribed to because it was just easier to put the blinders on.

But my keynote shattered his rose colored glasses and he couldn't unsee what I had drummed up for him.

He knows this is his time to live his best life and yet he is afraid.

He is afraid to be judged by colleagues, patients, and employees.

He is afraid to be judged by family, the internet, and himself.

He is afraid to misstep because he has invested everything into this path he is on and feels overwhelmed by the idea of pivoting from it.

Yet, he no longer feels this is the right path, no matter how entrenched he is in this current version of his life.

He knows he has maxed out his potential on this current path and he desires nothing more than to start growing again and changing the world with what he knows.

Yet, betting on the life he knows he should be living carries tremendous risk and vulnerability.

It takes courage.

It takes gut.

It takes fearlessly bucking the system of "shoulds" he has been unhappily subscribed to.

So we sat down and envisioned his dream life - what it looks like, what it smells like, what it feels like, what it tastes like, what it sounds like.

He fully immersed himself in it for that moment and it made his face soften, his body relax, and his breathing slow.

Then we looked at his skills that people were, are, and would be willing to pay him for - inside and outside his current profession.

He ordered them from most loved to most hated and his top three skills were incongruent with his current line of work (this happens often).

He looked disappointed for a moment, then angry.

When I asked what was going on in his mind, he shook his head and took a few minutes to get his words.

"I have been stuck for so long, hating my life, and here you are sitting in front of me with the simple next step that I know is right and I'm so angry that I have let myself be miserable for so long and so scared to do something about it. I feel like a coward. I feel weak".

I let him know this is normal amongst professionals his vintage.

I hear similar stories on the daily and I know what it takes to get to the other side, to be living your dream life while doing work that inspires you and changes the world while you are at it.

I let him know the only thing standing between his currently life and his dream life, is him.

He awkwardly shifted at that notion, realizing the choice to start living his dream life is 100% up to him.

What got him stuck was a series of choices aligned with others' "shoulds".

What will get him unleashed into his dream life is a series of choices aligned with what he wants.

It's as simple as that.

I asked him to close his eyes and picture the parts of his life that he hates in his work, his home, his family life.

His face got tense as he engaged his senses in the visualization.

Then I asked him to imagine striking a match, throwing it over his shoulder and burning everything he hates about his life to the ground - with no negative consequences.

His body softened, his lips unfurled, and his breathing slowed.

He opened his eyes and said, "Ange, you know this isn't going to be easy for me, right?"

I assured him it would be easier than he could imagine and that fewer people would be maimed by him unleashing himself into the life he dreams of.

He asked "how do you know that?"

I put my hand on his shoulder and told him "I've done it, I've helped others do it, and the life on the other side is worth overcoming the fear of the burn, but we'll do it with intention and strategy so you can have the life you want in the shortest time possible."

He breathed a sigh of relief and then asked..."Ange, how do we get started?"

This audience members' story is not unique.

His trials are the trials of all my clients.

It takes discipline to unless our dream lives and whoever breaks that code with support from people like you, it will be glad that they made that decision.

Dr. Angela Mulrooney Great post, Angela! The ability to pivot is a key trait of successful entrepreneurs, especially in times of change and uncertainty like we're currently experiencing. It's inspiring to see that you're encouraging others to embrace the mindset of pivoting and taking control of their careers during the Great Resignation. By doing so, people can create new opportunities for themselves and build the futures they want. Keep up the great work and continue to inspire others to embrace change and pivot towards success!
