Unleash the Power of ChatGPT with Stellar Prompts
Unleash the Power of ChatGPT with Stellar Prompts
As we navigate the evolving landscape of AI, ChatGPT has become a powerful tool that completely transforms the way we work. Within two months after launch, ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly active users. In comparison, it took Instagram two and a half years to get to this point, and TikTok got there in nine months. If we’re not careful, it’ll soon overtake Microsoft Office as the gold standard productivity tool in enterprise organizations! AI and ChatGPT are here to stay, so we better get on board ??
Based on my experience using ChatGPT in my daily work and working with our team on integrating OpenAI with NEXT – which will automate the entire product discovery flow – I have put together 11 actionable tips that will help you craft better ChatGPT prompts. Let's dive in!
1. Be clear
To get the most out of ChatGPT, prompts need to be crystal clear and specific. Avoid ambiguity and ensure your expectations are clearly defined. The more precise your question or prompt, the more targeted and useful the response will turn out to be.
Example:
"Identify the top three frustrations the user shared in this interview transcript related to the signup experience of NEXT."
2. Ask open-ended questions
Asking open-ended questions to ChatGPT will result in more elaborate answers. Use them to encourage ChatGPT to analyze topics in-depth and provide well-rounded perspectives. They encourage creative and thoughtful responses.
Example:
"Discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of using Intercom Tours as part of our User Onboarding Journey in NEXT."
3. Provide context
To ensure relevant and accurate answers, you’ll have to provide sufficient context in your prompts. Include relevant background information, goals, and constraints to guide ChatGPT's responses. By offering context, you increase the likelihood of receiving valuable and on-point answers that can almost be copy-pasted!
Example:
"What growth hacking strategies can we employ to boost our user base and increase overall engagement in on our website?"
4. Make it short and sweet
Get quick and efficient responses by making prompts concise and snappy. Long-winded questions can confuse ChatGPT’s algorithm, leading to less focused and fuzzy answers. If possible, keep it short and concise so the AI can easily process it.
Example:
"Here is a summary of the data of our recent Google Ads campaign. Using this dataset, analyze this data, focusing on engagement metrics, follower growth, and conversion rates. Provide me with recommendations on how to improve our next campaign."
5. Get into role playing
Ask ChatGPT to take a specific role or perspective to better align its answers with your needs and tone of voice. For example, you could ask it to act as UX researcher or Customer Success Manager when responding. Or make it fun and ask it take Elon Musk or Bill Gates’ perspective –?you'll be surprised by the quality of responses it will give you!
Example:
"As a UX researcher, what recommendations would you suggest to enhance the user onboarding experience in our app based on the feedback voiced by the user in this interview transcript?"
6. Put your users at the center
Include user references in your prompts for more tailored and personalized responses. Describe your target user or audience, their needs, and preferences. By doing so, you're more likely that the recommendations and answers ChatGPT gives you fit your needs and situation.

Example:
"Based on these three interviews, what features and functionalities seem to be most important to Product Owners and UX researchers using NEXT?"
7. Illustrate with examples
Clarify your expectations with examples for more accurate and actionable insights. Providing examples helps ChatGPT understand your expectations and the level of detail you’re looking for. This leads to more creative and useful responses that others have already thought about in lots of detail.
Example:
"List potential features that we can implement that will create more engagement of different types of users, besides UX researchers, on the product discovery platform NEXT that are similar to how Figma was able to democratize design for the entire product team.”
8. Size matters!
Control the length of ChatGPT’s answers and prevent it from endless rambling and making things up. Whether you want a brief summary or an in-depth analysis, make sure to indicate your preference to receive a response that suits what you’re looking for.
Example:
"Here is an interview transcript of an interview we conducted to improve NEXT’s onboarding flow. Act as a UX researcher and create a brief overview of the main takeaways. Distinguish between in-app onboarding and out-of-app onboarding tactics and provide three bullet points for each category.”
9. Iterative prompting is key
Break your question into smaller, interconnected queries for more focused results. This approach allows you to gradually build upon previous answers, diving deeper into complex topics while maintaining clarity and structure throughout the conversation.
Example:
Prompt #1: "What are SEO best practices to consider when building a website and writing content?"
Prompt #2: "What specific actions can we take to optimize our website https://nextapp.co/ based on these factors?"
10. Refine, refine, refine
Optimize your approach by revising and refining your prompts for maximum value. If ChatGPT's response isn't up to snuff, adjust the wording, context, or focus of your prompt. This iterative process helps fine-tune your prompts to extract the most valuable insights.
Example:
Prompt #1: "What do users think about our NEXT's navigation layout based on this interview transcript?"
Prompt #2: "What specific improvements can we make to NEXT's navigation layout based on this user feedback?"
11. Use "if-then" scenarios
Direct ChatGPT's response using conditional statements based on specific scenarios or outcomes. "If-then" statements help ChatGPT understand dependencies and potential consequences, allowing it to provide more relevant and actionable suggestions.
Example:
"If users report difficulty finding a specific feature, what steps can we take to improve discoverability and user experience?"
