The world is changing and advancing very fast. Businesses that we never heard of are booming. At the same time, the existing business is coming to us in a new form and shape.?
In the present world of industry 4.0 and web 3.0, upgrading and advancing skills have also become necessary.?
With the business taking a new form, shape, and with technological advancement happening rapidly, the need for learning a new skill or relearning an existing skill has become mandatory. The need for up-gradation is necessary both at professional and individual capacity.?
But how do we do this? Can we learn or relearn continuously? Yes, learning and relearning can happen with minimal effort to an extent. But how do we cope with age-old business coming in a new format? Is this even possible??
Yes, the answer to this is unlearning??
What is this unlearning? How is it different from learning or relearning??
UNLEARNING is the process of discarding something from your memory. It is to make an effort to forget your usual way of doing something so that you can learn a new and sometimes better way.
To know what to unlearn, you need to be self-aware about your thoughts, beliefs, and habits.
As we know, learning is the art of knowing, understanding, and internalizing concepts, and relearning is learning something again. Unlearning is overriding or shelving off an already learned skill in favor of new evidence.
In most cases, unlearning helps to get rid of our preconceptions and become better.?
Alvin Toffler - an American writer, futurist, and businessman said:?
The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.
Let us understand this better with an example in my own life.?How unlearning helped me continuously in my professional life??
Let's take recruitment as an example.?
I have been very successful in recruitment right from day one of my career. Initial days, finding talent was done through paper advertisement or distributing pamphlets. And came job boards and social media. And today, many newer ways are emerging in finding talent.?
I kept myself learning, relearning, and unlearning. My willingness to forego my previous learning - i.e., unlearning, always helped me find talent and be ahead of others.?
I am sure every one of us would have faced this kind of situation. And to be ahead of others and to cope with the fast-moving work, one needs to learn, relearn and unlearn.?
To conclude, Unlearning is the skill of the hour. It helps to ace both in the profession and as an individual.?
