Unlearning to Learn
Hal Eisenberg, CEO, The Eisenberg Leadership Academy
Manifesting what's possible. Period.
In the quiet moments of introspection, when the world falls away and we're left face-to-face with our truest selves, we often discover that our greatest obstacles aren't external challenges, but the assumptions we've held dear for so long. This is a story of unlearning, of challenging the very foundations of what I thought I knew about myself, about love, about life, and ultimately, about education.
The Shadows We Cast
For years, even up to recently, I walked through life casting a long shadow… a shadow of control, of territoriality, of assumptions that I now recognize, with more clarity than ever before, were rooted in the fertile soil of childhood abandonment. I assumed I knew the truth. I assumed people would always be there. I assumed I was over the wounds of my past. But assumptions, I've learned, are like invisible chains, binding us to versions of reality that often exist only in our minds. And obviously everyone knows the famous saying about making assumptions. So true. Especially in my case.
I didn't see how these assumptions were shaping my world, constricting my relationships, and ultimately, leading me to lose what mattered most. It's a painful irony that in our attempts to hold on tightly to what we love, we sometimes squeeze the very life out of it.
The Subconscious Dance
Looking back, I see now how I was caught in a subconscious dance, a loop of behaviors driven by stories I had told myself so many times they had become my truth. These were the "cute little stories" I clung to… narratives about who I was, what I needed, what I feared. They were comforting in their familiarity, but restrictive in ways I couldn't yet see.
This dance, this loop, was a form of manipulation… not malicious, but born from a place of fear and a deep-seated need for control. It was as if I was trying to choreograph every step of my life and the lives of those around me, leaving no room for the beautiful improvisation that is at the heart of genuine connection and growth.
The Cost of Assumptions
The price of these assumptions was steep. Relationships strained under the weight of unspoken expectations. Opportunities slipped by, unseen because they didn't fit the narrative I had constructed. And most painfully, I lost connections with people I deeply cared about, people I had assumed would always be there.
It's a profound and humbling experience to realize that the very things you do to protect yourself, to ensure love and connection, can be the very things that push it away. In my attempts to avoid abandonment, I had unknowingly set the stage for it. Isn't the universe fascinating with its paradoxical experiences of polarity?
The Mirror of Loss
Loss has a way of holding up a mirror, forcing us to see ourselves clearly, often for the first time. In the reflection of my losses, I saw not just the pain, but the beauty of the connections I had been blessed with. I saw the lessons embedded in every goodbye, every ending.
And in this seeing, a shift began. I started to understand that the beauty of paths crossing isn't always in their permanence, but in the transformations they inspire. Every connection, every loss, every moment of joy and pain… they were all musical notes in the composition of my becoming.?
Embracing the Shadow
The journey of challenging my assumptions led me to a place I had long avoided… a compassionate embrace of my younger self, the "little Hal" who had experienced abandonment and carved these deep grooves of assumption and control as a means of survival.
I realized that true healing, true growth, wasn't about pushing away these parts of myself, but about integrating them. It was about acknowledging the fears, the needs, the wounds, and holding them with gentleness and understanding.
The Bridge to Education
As I navigated this deeply personal journey, a parallel revelation emerged about the nature of education. I began to see how our educational systems are often built on a foundation of assumptions… assumptions about how children learn, about what knowledge is valuable, about the very purpose of education itself.

Just as I had to challenge my personal assumptions to grow, I realized that to truly transform education, we must be willing to question everything. What if education wasn't just about imparting knowledge, but about fostering the skills to challenge assumptions? What if the core of learning was not memorization, but curiosity?
Education as Spiritual Growth
This realization led me to a powerful conclusion: education, at its heart, should be about spiritual growth. Not in a religious sense, but in the profound journey of self-discovery, of understanding our place in the world and our connections to others.
Imagine a classroom where students are encouraged not just to answer questions, but to question the questions themselves. Where the focus is not on conforming to predetermined outcomes, but on exploring the vast landscape of human potential. Where we teach not just facts and figures, but the art of introspection, the skill of empathy, the courage to challenge one's own beliefs.
The Power of Questioning
In my personal life, learning to question my assumptions has been liberating, albeit painful. It's allowed me to release what no longer serves me, to find gratitude in loss, to love more freely and authentically. In education, this same power of questioning could be revolutionary.
When we encourage students to question everything… about life, growth, love, who we are, who we want to be, humanity… we're not just preparing them for tests. We're preparing them for life. We're equipping them with the tools to navigate an ever-changing world, to adapt, to innovate, to connect deeply with others and with themselves.
A Personal Mission, A Universal Vision
As I face my own health challenges, with doctors telling me that cancer is now aggressive and that I'm not healing, I find myself clinging more firmly than ever to the belief in my soul's ability to heal. This belief, this hope, is not separate from my mission to transform education… it's integral to it.
Because at the core of both is the profound truth that we are more than our circumstances, more than our assumptions, more than our fears. We are beings of infinite potential, capable of growth, transformation, and love beyond what we can imagine.
An Invitation to Unlearn
So, to you, dear reader, whether you're an educator, a student, a parent, or simply a fellow traveler on this journey of life… I extend an invitation. An invitation to question, to unlearn, to challenge the assumptions that may be holding you back.
In your personal life, dare to look at the stories you tell yourself. Are they serving you? Are they true? In your professional life, especially if you're involved in education, dare to imagine a system built not on rigid assumptions, but on flexibility, curiosity, and the joy of discovery.
To those who have been part of my journey… those who have stayed, those who have left, those who have taught me through their presence and their absence… I offer my deepest gratitude. You have all been my teachers, guiding me towards this understanding, this mission.
And to the future… to the classrooms yet to be built, the minds yet to be ignited, the assumptions yet to be challenged… I offer my hope, my vision, and my unwavering commitment to transformation.
Let us dare to question everything. Let us dare to unlearn, to grow, to transform. For in doing so, we don't just change ourselves or our educational systems… we change the world. And I don’t know about you, but I do wish to be the change I want to see in the world.?

1 个月I never visit LinkedIn, but since I was here I read your blog. So well written and shared! (Definitely not overshared! This is what the world needs to read more of.) I found this part really profound and think so many people would benefit from knowing this themselves: "The journey of challenging my assumptions led me to a place I had long avoided… a compassionate embrace of my younger self, the "little Hal" who had experienced abandonment and carved these deep grooves of assumption and control as a means of survival. I realized that true healing, true growth, wasn't about pushing away these parts of myself, but about integrating them. It was about acknowledging the fears, the needs, the wounds, and holding them with gentleness and understanding." I deeply believe that meeting these abandoned parts of ourselves with kindness and love is the only true path to healing. And especially when you are healing something serious, as you are, this deep work is where all the breakthroughs come from. Along with holding an unshakeable vision of your future self, completely healed and full of self love and self joy, surrounded by other leaders who you are safe to "expect" will give you back the kindness + support you gave them. :)
