??Week 35: Unlearn by Barry O’Reilly ??

Let go of past success to achieve extraordinary results.

Stuck in low-growth mode or unable to get to the next level? Then this book is for you.

Senge’s Laws of System Thinking

  1. Today’s problems come from “yesterday's” solutions
  2. The harder you push, the harder the system pushes back
  3. Behaviour grows better before it grows worse
  4. The easy way out usually leads back in
  5. The cure can be worse than the disease
  6. Faster is slower
  7. Cause and effect are not closely related in time and space
  8. Small changes can produce big results - but the areas of highest leverage are often the least obvious
  9. You can have your cake and eat it too - but not at once
  10. Dividing an elephant in half does not produce two small elephants
  11. There is no blame

Disruption doesn’t apply to organisations. The truth is it applies to individuals.?

Two reasons we can’t let something going.

  1. An attachment to the past
  2. A fear of the future?- Marie Kondo

Why exactly do you want to unlearn?

What specifically do you want to unlearn?

Psychological safety is a leading indicator for higher performance and results.

UNLEARNING PROMPTS:

  • Where are you falling short of your expectations?
  • Where are you not seeing the outcomes you want?
  • What are you willing to do to affect those outcomes?
  • How could you get out of your comfort zone and succeed?
  • What would thinking big and starting small be for you?

Obstacles Include:

  • Our leadership conditioning
  • Our knowledge threshold
  • Our biases
  • Our desire to always be correct
  • Our focus on rewards and recognition
  • Our ability ( or inability) to deal with the uncertainty and risk
  • Our curiosity (or lack thereof)
  • Our environment

You don’t trigger a shift in mindset by simply thinking differently; you start by acting differently.

CONDITIONS OF UNLEARNING:

Condition 1: Identity a challenge you wish to address

Condition 2: Define success as though you have conquered the challenge

Condition 3: Channel courage over seeking comfort

Condition 4: Commit to starting, and scaling the cycle of unlearning

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn - Alvin Toffler.

CONDITIONS OF RELEARNING:

Condition 1: You’ve thought big, now create options for small steps

Condition 2: Find the right behaviour to achieve the outcomes

Condition 3: Starting small is even smaller than you think.

To change when you feel something is hard look at BJ Fogg's Behaviour Model

B=MAP Behaviour = Motivation, Ability & Prompt.?

Behaviour matching:

Fogg Maxim 1: Help people do what they already want to do

Fogg Maxim 2: Help people feel successful

4 Necessary Conditions for Breakthrough:

Necessary Condition 1: Reflect

Necessary Condition 2: Feedforward (next small experiment)

Necessary Condition 3: Align impact and increase safety to scale breakthrough

Necessary Condition 4: Increase your rate of unlearning

Da Vinci didn’t have a to-do list, he had a to-discover list.

VUCA - Volatility, Uncertainty Complexity and Ambiguity

LADDER OF LEADERSHIP

Level Worker Says Boss Says

7 I’ve been doing… What have you been doing?

6 I’ve done… What have you done?

5 I intend to… What do you intend to do?

4 I would like to… What would you like to do?

3 I think… What do you think?

2 I see… What do you see? Tell me more

1 Tell me what to do I’ll tell you what to do.

Giving more control by moving UP the ladder.

COACHING KATA

  1. What is the target condition?
  2. What is the actual condition now?
  3. What obstacles do you think are preventing you from reaching the target condition? Which ones are you addressing now?
  4. What is your next (next experiment)? What do you expect??
  5. When can you go and see what we learned from taking that step?

AMAZON LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES

Learn and Be Curious

Think Big

Bias for Action

Earn Trust

Have a Backbone, Disagree and Commit

N.A.S.A. transformed from a know-it-all to a learn-from-all organisation.

Informal learning:

  • It is triggered by daily routines
  • It is triggered by an internal or external jolt
  • It is not highly conscious
  • It is haphazard and influenced by chance (something sparks)
  • It is an inductive process of reflection and action
  • It is linked to learning from others

A mix of easy-to-measure and hard-to-measure metrics.

To attain knowledge add things every day. To attain wisdom remove things every day. - Lao Tzu

If you are always chasing success it will constantly elude you, But if you always prioritise incredible personal growth, impact and paradigm-shifting experiences, success will gravitate toward you as if you were a magnet.?

Summary:

A similar theme to Marshall Goldsmith’s book “What got you here won’t get you there” this book helps you begin to let go of the mental models and learning that are no longer relevant to your future success.? A process of thinking differently by “unlearning”

1 Key Takeaway/Insight:

You don’t trigger a shift in mindset by simply thinking differently; you start by acting differently.
