UNIVERSITY PHOTOGRAPHY LECTURING
Jason Dodd
Owner, Jason Dodd Photography, covering Automotive, Commercial, Editorial photography across UK and Europe.
Just in the middle of the ten week practical photography lecturing at the University of Kent, this week we are covering the fundamentals of studio portrait photography, with model Chloe working with a group of students utilising the extensive lighting set up that is on hand at the studio.
This has been my third week of lectures, with two groups who were keen to find out more about photography, from the very basics to putting together a full studio set up. The students have ten areas for their final photographic portfolio to cover, a single image needs to cover a wide range of subjects which include portraits, landscape, nature and photojournalism photography. Each lesson covers a brief overview of each subject along with a practical element, the main focus using the Nikon DSLR's in manual modes.
The lesson highlights the benefit of just using a simple one light set up along with a reflector, then adding a second light for backlighting, side profiles or making the backdrop change. Sometimes the studio can be daunting but sticking to the basics initially is a good learning curve.
