University of Derby logistics week - final mile showcase - Carmen livery board in East Midlands

Final mile, last mile clean air transport showcase

Institute of Couriers set a historic back drop to the very latest electric and gas final mile vehicles in Express Logistics at the prestigious Derby University, heart of logistics England geographic, centre of the UK heartland for roads. Gas and electric trucks, prototype two wheel EVs amongst the quadracycles. Adding history with the IOC classic eighties Honda courier bike adorned with Carmen livery tax board marking the oldest vehicle registration for freight in the World.

Institute of Couriers national chair, Carl Lomas met University of Derby, Dr Pouria Liravi his week to showcase the historic freight vehicle taxation practice where oak freight ?carts delivered supply chain had received the first ever registration numbers in the City Sq mile of London before the Lord Mayor brand stamped tax letters to allow the use of vehicles for trade. The ceremony dates back five hundred years with the livery of the Carmen. The board is seen in the hands of Dr Liravi and Lomas at the University of Derby with a classic eighties courier bike showcasing the boo years of final mile that today we see as delivery to door for e-retail.

The key employer talk amongst the vehicles followed the livery and trade learning with much discussion of apprenticeships and particularly the Express manager degree opportunity for next generation heads of the logistics industry.


Setting the scene with a large rigid truck electric Volvo unit from Dawson Rental Group, the front door car park of the University was adorned with every form of final mile from two wheel prototype electric Yamahas to four wheel quadricycle, clean air electric vans and a giant truck articulated truck tractor unit powered by LPG gas.

The next generation of clean air circled a historic petrol based eighties CX 500 Honda courier bike provided by the Inst of Couriers, estimated to have delivered half a million parcels in the eighties, IOC chair Carll Lomas, liveryman of the Carmen explained the courier bike livery board of the City of London, the oldest vehicle taxation ceremony in the World with oak board branding for the City of London.

Dr Tracey Worth spoke final mile, sixty billion deliveries to door in 2024 across the four streams of express logistics, ail, parcel, food and meal delivery to the door, she explained the Lascelles multi LSP model and the triangle diagram of final ile sector that had been prepared for cabinet office at the time of Covid.

Maritime rail head, East Midlands gateway J24 park and East Midlands air port were all in view for the final mile focus of transport.

Guests of the University from the hot spot geographic of the D2N2 postcode were in for a treat of logistics day with round table discussion groups, student interaction and an end of Conference master class.
