Position Description

General Manager and Chief Executive Officer

Reports To: President, University Club Board of Directors

Classification:?Full-time; Exempt – Executive

The University Club of Michigan State University is a private 501(c)(7) social club.?Though the club is affiliated with Michigan State University, it maintains independent not for profit status and is governed by an independent board of directors.?

The University Club seeks an energetic and enthusiastic leader who can communicate positively and effectively with members, employees and our community.?The General Manager (GM) must be both creative and innovative, able to anticipate products and strategies appropriate for our emerging future.?She/he must demonstrate the commitment and skills to steward the Club’s resources, both our place and its people.

The functions of the Chief Executive Officer of the Club described below are intentionally comprehensive.?The Board of Directors appreciates the challenge of finding an individual who demonstrates all of the skills necessary to perform the position as described, but is anxious to engage about the position with those individuals who meet the required qualifications.

Position Summary:

Serves as Chief Executive Officer of the club:

  • Provides leadership and instills a culture of excellence focused on member satisfaction.
  • Develops and disseminates a management philosophy to guide club personnel toward member satisfaction, employee morale and optimal efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Manages all aspects of the University Club, including its activities and the relationships between the club and its Board of Directors, members, guests, employees, vendors, Henry Center Complex partners, community, government, and industry.
  • Exhibits a high level of cognitive reasoning, analytical identification, creative problem-solving, and analysis of various sources of data and information. Involves reading and research, outstanding oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Coordinates and administers the club’s policies as defined by its Board of Directors.
  • Develops policies and procedures and directs the work of the executive team.
  • Implements and monitors the budget, monitors the quality of the club’s products and services, and ensures maximum member and guest satisfaction.
  • Secures, protects, and develops the club’s assets, including facilities and equipment, recommending capital projects and overseeing their successful completion, as appropriate.

?Essential Functions:

1.???Ensures that the club provides exceptional member service that is expected at a private club, including fine dining with the highest quality of food, beverage, and service. Ensures the highest standards for outdoor recreation, fitness, spa, entertainment, and all other activities.

2.???Coordinates the development of the club’s long-term and annual (business) plans. Develops, maintains, and administers a sound organizational plan; initiates improvements and changes as necessary.

3.???Coordinates development of operating and capital budgets; monitors monthly and other financial statements for the club and participates in the annual audit; takes effective corrective action as required. ?

4.???Analyzes financial statements, manages cash flow, and establishes controls to safeguard funds. Reviews income and costs relative to goals; takes corrective action as necessary. Monitors compliance with purchasing policies and procedures.

5.???Establishes and maintains a cooperative, positive working relationship with senior Michigan State University leadership. Establishes a positive working relationship with fellow stakeholders in the Henry Center Complex:?Henry Center, Executive Development Programs, MSU’s College of Business, Candlewood Suites Hotel, and Forest Akers golf courses.

6.???Oversees the implementation and adherence to policies established by the Board; directs their administration and execution. Plans, develops and approves operational policies, programs, procedures and methods in concert with general policies.

7.???Provides advice and recommendations to the Board of Directors and committees about construction, alterations, maintenance, materials, supplies, equipment and services not provided in approved plans and/or budgets. Oversees the care and maintenance of all of the club’s physical assets and facilities.

8.???Attends meetings of the club’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Coordinates and serves as ex-officio member of appropriate club committees.

9.???Ensures that the marketing and membership relations programs promote the club’s services and facilities to potential and present members. ?Welcomes new club members; is visible and available to club members as practical during their visits to the club.

10. Participates in selected campus and community organizations and activities to enhance the prestige and brand awareness of the Club; broadens the scope and market of the club as a participating member of the community.

11. Consistently assures that the club is operated in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws; responsible for maintaining all appropriate licenses, permits, and inspections.

12. Maintains membership with the Club Managers Associations of America and other professional associations; attends conferences, workshops and meetings to keep abreast of current information and developments in the field.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

Required

·?????Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, General Business, or a related field of study, with ten or more years of experience as a Club Manager or a comparable level of leadership responsibility.

·?????Exceptional leadership skills and the ability to create and maintain a culture of service excellence to the club membership.

·?????A high level of interpersonal skills to lead, relate to, and communicate with a diverse group of members, management, the community, and staff, often involving the ability to deal with demanding and challenging people.

·?????The ability to multi-task complex, diverse priorities and activities and to plan and execute complex goals and projects.

?Preferred

·?????Significant experience in the food and beverage area

·?????Experience with overseeing/managing budgets, financial analysis, and financial decision making

·?????Marketing knowledge and experience; ability to create marketing plans

·?????Experience with capital improvement projects,

·?????Designation as a Certified Club Manager (or near completion).
