University Acceptance = Brain Drain

My Dearest Motherland,

It’s been far too long since we have spoken, and I hope this note finds you well.

One of your son's shared with me yesterday that he has been accepted to graduate school in Florida. As a lifelong learner, I applaud anyone’s academic pursuit, but as a researcher focused on high-skilled migration, I can't help but wonder where his path will lead once equipped with his master’s degree.

It seems every few weeks I get alerts on WhatsApp and Facebook celebrating the accomplishments of Bahamians studying globally and making their mark in sports, entertainment, and every conceivable industry. And while I know you are proud of us; I wonder now that you are turning 50 whether you need more of us at home?

Bahamas and Caribbean Brain Drain -depiction

I am passionate about ensuring that students and high-skilled professionals from the Bahamas and our Caribbean region gain recognition for our role in advancing global industries. Since you encouraged me and countless others to “be excellent and show the world the manner of our bearing” I know you are also proud of us, and yet I wonder what will happen to you, as more of us leave for global universities and careers. I also wonder whether you are aware that, the United Nations and other global entities have confirmed that the rate of migration of highly educated people from the Bahamas and Caribbean is one of the highest in the world- per capita?

When I examined is the Brain Gain the solution to the Caribbean brain drain, I learned that the brain drain in our region is a complex one, that I am hopeful will be discussed inclusive of the perspective of the diaspora, in support of resolution.

As you approach your milestone birthday this July 10th, I hope you know that many of us in the diaspora are proud of our culture, have gained global academic and professional experience, are passionate about national development, equipped with a diversity of social remittance, and are just a call or a click away!

With love,

Dr. Michelle Rencher we need to plug the drain. The transformation required to do so needs a proper process and people willing to take action on implementing the solutions that will attract us back to and regain our trust so that we can "Pledge to excel through love and unity." Where we can continue "?Pressing onward, march together to a common loftier goal;" Thank you for bringing and keeping attention to this subject.
