A universe of professional emotions

Today, I want to share one of the theories about emotions that inspired my research on the emotional quotient, the book "The Universe of Emotions" by Eduardo Punset and Rafael Bisquerra. This book immerses us in a deep exploration of emotions, from their composition to their origin and how they influence our lives.

Often, we tend to see emotions as something intangible, difficult to describe in words. Yet they are incredibly sensory, constantly enveloping us in a symphony of feelings. Language sometimes falls short of expressing the richness of our emotions.

You may ask, why is it so important to understand our emotions? The answer is simple: our emotions have a profound impact on our lives, especially in our professional lives. If you've ever felt upset, caught up in drama or trauma, or been distracted by your own emotions, you'll know how limiting it can be. But here's the key: if we don't understand where those emotions come from, it's hard to address them and change our reality. Understanding our emotions gives us the power to manage them and use them to our advantage.

Navigating the Intriguing Emotional Universe

Imagine our emotions as galaxies in the vast universe of the mind. Each emotion is like a unique galaxy, with its own main sun, orbiting planets and satellites. Within each emotional galaxy, we find a cluster of related emotions, and the intensity and the words we use to describe them are like the asteroids orbiting the planets.

In the rich English language, we have mapped more than 500 different emotions, each with its own emotional galaxy. But there's more than that: in addition to the basic emotions that are born with us, there are also social emotions that we learn over time. Remember the first time you experienced embarrassment when you were naked? Shame is a social emotion that we acquire through interaction with others and the development of our thinking.

As we go through life, language evolves and we create new ways of experiencing and expressing our emotions. Have you ever felt intense emotion and realised that you can't label it? This happens because our emotions are often a complex mix of different feelings. But herein lies the beauty of this journey: learning to identify and understand these emotions allows us to recognise our current emotional location and discover where we want to go.

Conquering Professional Clarity

Clarity in the professional sphere is essential for success. To achieve it, we must answer some important questions. When do we achieve clarity? How do we feel about our tasks? Where and when do we do our jobs? Why do we choose certain activities? How easily do we carry out our responsibilities?

Imagine that your mind is like an emotional gymnasium. Just as we train our muscles to stay physically fit, we need to train our emotions to stay emotionally balanced. This is especially important in today's world of work, where emotional skills are as valuable as cognitive skills.

The Transformative Tool of Choice Every 10 Seconds

This is where a powerful tool comes into play: conscious choice every 10 seconds. Imagine taking charge of your emotions and actions, making conscious choices every few seconds. This technique allows you to empower yourself and deliberately direct your life, even in the midst of a sea of emotions.

The choice is not a long-term commitment; it is a choice at the moment. What are you choosing to feel and experience in this very moment? And in the next? This consistent practice allows you to develop greater emotional intelligence and helps you navigate the complexities of professional and personal life.
