I took a walk yesterday morning. The silence was reinvigorating. Everywhere was calm. No cars, no smoke from cars, no noise from traffic. My surroundings were clean, there was no waste lying about indiscriminately. The trees were swaying gorgeously, the air was clean, some animals roamed about freely. The grasses appeared fuller and greener and the air was cool because of the oxygen coming from the grass and trees which has not been polluted by smoke or noise from moving cars. The feeling that i felt, i had never felt before in my life.
The earth appears to be healing and recovering from human interruption which is causing #ClimateChange. Is the universe trying to communicate something to us with the #Covid19?
All over the world, there is a pause. Who would have ever thought that there would come a time like this? Suddenly, nothing matters as much as our core well being which has made us all to stay indoors and let the earth breathe.
Here are some things I observed during the lockdown;
Generally;
1.There is no Pollution; All over the world, there were huge drops in levels of pollution.
2. The lockdown caused all countries of the world to work together to find a solution to the Covid19 pandemic. The emphasis is on ‘countries working together’.
3. Humans working to help others by giving free items such as hand sanitizers, face masks, food, money, etc.
4. Companies offering their services for free.
5. Reduction in crime and terrosist activities. Who else observed this? Ever since the pandemic we haven't heard stories about boko haram or other bombings around the world. Even thieves and terrorists are afraid of the pandemic.
6. Families are spending time with each other and couples are bonding deeply, love is revitalizing once again in marriages. Parents are spending more time with their children. A friend of mine in the U.S. mentions that he got to see his young child take his first step. He noted that if he had been at work, the child would have been at daycare so he wouldn’t witness this. He is grateful for the opportunity. Another friend in Paris recounts that she observed that her boys are able to be more coordinated and do productive school work at home much more than they do and achieve in school. If she wasn’t home she would not have observed this and acted on it.
7. Animals coming out into the cities; We often forget that the earth is made for us and the animals. For example, Dolphins were seen in the venice canal. It is usually not seen because it remained in hiding as humans carry on their tourist activities. We usually think that animals live only in the bushes and parks. But this is not so. The earth maintains a cycle. Humans, plants and animals must depend on each other for survival.
Personally;
1.I have paid more attention to myself. I realize that in all the hustle and bustle, i have not really given myself and my body the care, rest and nutrition it needed. I am now taking more time to eat well, rest more and exercise.
2. I am eating well and avoiding junk. This has seriously and positively reflected in how i look and feel.
3. I realize that i am using my time more effectively and as a result being more productive. Emphasis is on productive.
4. I realize that this change is helping my mental growth, balance and health. I am very much at peace with myself and happier because of the peace and less distraction.
5. I watched a movie. Asides from few trips to the cinema with friends, I haven’t watched any movie in the last two years despite having loads of movies transferred to 3 flash drives from my sister.
6. I find that i am more focused and reaching my goals faster than during the hustle and bustle. Before, the routine is — Wake up, head to work (without exercise or food), stay in traffic, schedule and attend meetings, plan and worry endlessly, make call, email people, eat junk, plan our trainings at RETTI, deal with work disappointments from people, prepare reports and apply for grants for Glow Initiative, check that volunteers and staff are doing well, feel tired, follow up with alumni, try to attend to work partners and everyone needing my attention via emails, video meetings and calls etc. Head home and stay through the traffic and arrive home extremely exhausted and wondering if i really should be doing this and if there’s an easier way.
7. I am consuming less media. My smartphone screen damaged two days ago (and with the lockdown i cannot repair or replace it) and i am happy that i get to consume no or less media especially coronavirus media. This has really done a lot for my mental state and lack of social media is helping me to read more books. I am in my second book so far.
The pandemic is refocusing we human beings and bringing us back to what really matters — Humanity. The coronavirus pandemic is definitely uniting the globe and making us better human beings.
No doubt the world will take a new turn post Covid 19. As we all recover from the pandemic, lets ensure to fix measures that will cause a balance between our activities as humans and environmental protection, so the earth can continue to enjoy its newly found tranquility — This is called sustainability. living our lives in a way that we achieve our goals but also ensure that our actions is not impacting the environment negatively. We will be avoiding a huge disaster if we do this. Climate impacts are heavier than the current #Covid19 impacts. So we don’t want the earth to retaliate.
How can you make this change and play a role for the earth?We can do this by reducing how much carbon we generate as we live our lives. You can start by Understanding Carbon FootPrints and How you Aid Climate Change Through Its Creation and How to Reduce your Carbon Footprint and Contribute Positively to Environmental Protection.
