Universal Month for Human Rights: Three Ways to Take Part

Universal Month for Human Rights: Three Ways to Take Part

On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Today, many recognize this historical milestone in December, the Universal Month for Human Rights.

The Declaration states that everyone is entitled to fundamental rights, regardless of difference. It includes the right to equality and the right to life, liberty and security. It also includes the right to freedom of religion and speech and the right to participate in the cultural life of the community.

This month holds special importance to organizations like the Centre for Sexuality as we champion the rights of all. We are committed to leading the way in the area of human rights at the intersection of sexual rights and education. We offer training and education to support healthy bodies, healthy relationships and healthy communities for everyone.

This December, it’s important to take a moment to acknowledge the historical discrimination that led to the Declaration and the inequalities many marginalized people still face today. Here are three ways to participate in the Universal Month for Human Rights and encourage the continued fight for equality, justice and the dignity of all humans:

?

Learn about Canada’s history

Discover the milestones of Canadian human rights and learn how and when certain rights came to be. Some are newer than you might think – for example, just 20 years ago, rights like same-sex marriage were just being recognized.

?

Connect with your neighbours

In a city as vibrant and diverse as Calgary, it’s easy to expand your social circle and engage with people who lead different lives. Lean into your differences and learn how the fight for rights can show up differently for others. Check out community events to connect with others, volunteer at a local organization and get to know the people it serves, or simply start by saying hello the next time you see a neighbour out shovelling.

Commit to learning more in 2025

Our Training Centre team is equipped to educate people with all levels of knowledge on diversity and inclusion and empower them to be strong allies. When you stand up for the rights of others, you support the movement toward equality. We’ve designed our workshops to help create cultures of respect and equip professionals in all fields with the tools to recognize and support human rights, especially the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.
