UNIVERSAL FREE CREMATIONS - Why Hindus Cremate?
Hindus prefer cremation, as it is enjoined through the Garuda Maha Purana, the sacred text of Hindus that describes in detail the procedure to be followed in respect of the dead. The injunction given through this sacred text is to cremate the dead with wood. The type of wood used for open air cremation is also prescribed - for this alone liberates the departed soul.?
Due to this reason, Hindus do not utilize the facilities like Electric and CNG crematoria. Garuda Maha Purana permits following methods of cremation:
a) Cremations performed using wood - In order for departed soul attain Moksha (salvation) and free from Karmic cycle, body must be cremated using the following 4 types of wood or combination of these:?
Sandalwood (Santalum album); Bastard teak (Butea monosperma); Tulsi (Ocimum Sanctum); Banyan (Ficus benghalensis).
Every Hindu would aspire to say goodbye to world in a manner prescribed above. This method alone is being used by Hindus in India today. (20th shloka-10th chap)
b) Cremations using Cow Dung - the Garuda Maha Purana explicitly states that cremations with cow dung guarantees Moksha (salvation). This cannot be prevented even by the God of Death (Lord Yama).

Unfortunately, this became least preferred method owing to business interests in the Hindu funeral industry. (17th and 18th shloka-10th chap)
How we are stuck to wood- the catastrophe
70% deaths are Hindu deaths and Hindus prefer cremation to other methods like burial, CNG, electric etc. The cremations are of wood and open-air cremation. At least 450 kg wood is required per cremation i.e., 4 trees of at least 10-year age. Number of trees cut per year for cremations and the consequent CO2 emissions are phenomenal resulting in environmental catastrophe.?
Either man is either created or evolved. If he is created by God, then the God is impotent to save man from impending catastrophe. If evolved, his evolution is a perverted one… evolved in an obscenely perverted manner. The reason for eventual fall of mankind on this planet earth cannot be regarded as death or decease, dejection or despair, pollution or ice melts…but the man himself!!!
Each year over 20 million trees, each of which at least 10 years old, are cut for over 6 million cremations in India alone. This activity generates substantial carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Indian culture approves use of cow dung for cremations, in place of wood.
I will sign off for now. Will surely see you in my next article on Death!? (To know more – www.lastritesindia.com)?
