My grandparents came to England in the 1940s/50s by invitation of the Queen of England, and were denied access to celebrating their history and culture - e.g., “Your hair is too messy”, “Music and dancing improper”, etc..

Their forefathers and foremothers were brought to Jamaica decades before, being denied the right to celebrate and own their own history and culture. The family story goes that our last name was changed by an English School Teacher as it didn't look ‘proper’.

For me, embracing the shared histories of Africa and the Caribbean is personal.?
