United we stand
Richard Furniss
“In life, it’s the journey, trust in yourself, believe in yourself, you and only you control your future.”
Yesterday and tomorrow, what about today?
As I reflect on the year, we are leaving I think of the successes we have achieved as humans. Do I look at what we got right or what we got wrong? Yes, we can do better, we can always do better. This year, humans through their desire for self-preservation united against a disease to protect communities. I am left with hope as we leave 2020 as the underlying mission for the planet was to find a cure for a serious virus, to isolate ourselves and societies whilst we searched for solutions. Our various leaders seeking answers for the problem from a collection of perspectives.
So, as we enter 2021, I am confident a solution has been found for the virus.
Now imagine if the world was united in its endeavours against climate change. What if the world planted the planet with trees and we not only slowed but reversed our destruction of the planet with the same fervour and commitment we have made to fight the virus? The same outcome of self-preservation exists, we can see the evidence as our planet warms and larger tracts of land become abandoned. We have the science and the resources; economies will grow as we deploy resources to protect our planet. Think how swiftly we abandoned bricks and mortar stores to buy online, working from home, remote working. Families went up the tree of priorities as we isolated, connection, humanity and belonging forced a re-evaluation of what is important.
The virus was real and immediate, climate change is like our super fund, our retirement plan, so far in the future. So why save for our future when there is no tomorrow? Can we not invest and pivot as we have with the virus, for our planet, for our children’s children? As we enter 2021 let us plan to plant seeds for tomorrow, a green planet like the one we received. Let us have a common theme of survival free from difference, just one goal to ensure our planet is still habitable for our tomorrow.
2020 demonstrated nations countries and people can all work together in a united way to overcome, we are one people with one planet, wise aware and in tune. Let us begin 2021 with a goal to address climate change with action, plant trees, reduce consumption and share
In closing I say "yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery and today is a gift."
