United Way of Washtenaw County Announces $100,000 in grants to 2018 Opportunity Fund Recipients

November 20, 2017 (Ann Arbor, Mich.)– United Way of Washtenaw County (UWWC) awarded $100,000 in funding to organizations whose work benefits priority populations in Washtenaw County. UWWC defines priority populations as communities of color, lower-income populations, and specific geographic areas in our community

Many funded programs address inequity in Washtenaw County, including a youth-led Neutral Zone program that will amplify the voice of youth deeply affected by the recent incident at Ann Arbor’s Blake Transit Center. Students will research, analyze their data and develop key strategic recommendations for change to present to Ann Arbor City Council, the Board of AATA, the local police, the Downtown Development Authority and other community leaders from key spaces for teens such as the Ann Arbor District Library and the YMCA.

“This year we received a record level of interest in the Opportunity Fund,” said Pam Smith, CEO of United Way of Washtenaw County. “The community‘s challenges continue to outweigh the available resources. We remind everyone of the importance of giving back year round and especially during this holiday season,” said Pam Smith.

Funded organizations include CivCity Initiative, Corner Health Center, Growing Hope, Washtenaw County Public Health, Children’s Literacy Network, Community Action Network, Michigan Organization on Adolescent Sexual Health, Neutral Zone, Washtenaw County Office of Community & Economic Development and the Ypsilanti District Library. This year, the community impact committee reviewed 39 grant applications totaling $600,999 in funding requests – 6 times the amount available for funding. Did @thedisputeresolutioncenter get funded? The DRC does such important work in our community but doesn't seem to get the recognition it deserves...
