??????????????????????????????????? The United States has installed missiles in Germany.

The United States has been in Germany since the end of World War 2, when U.S troops

were stationed in what became West Germany. The United States will station conventionally armed intermediate range missiles in Germany starting in 2026. These weapons could also have nuclear capacity, but they are not being nuclear armed. ?There would have to be a separate agreement between Germany and America to make them nuclear.

U.S Army troops in Germany will have the Tomahawk land attack cruise missile which can be deployed from ships. This cruise missile has a range of 1,000 miles. This weaponry is capable of reaching deep into Russia. There is also a hypersonic missile that is now being developed for usage in Europe. This weapon has a potential range of over 1,800 miles. ?Finally there is a Standard Missile-6 missile, which is being primarily deployed for defense. ?These weapons will bolster the U.S army’s Multi-Domain Task Force which is based in Wiesbaden, Germany, The army first enabled this force in September 2021.

There was an Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty that was passed in 1987 under President Reagan, and it barred the usage of ground launched missiles that had a range of 310 to 3,400 miles. The Trump administration claimed that Russia was not living up to its obligations and withdrew in August 2019. Russia stopped its adherence to the treaty after America left.

America has stated that the Russian activity pursuant to its missiles demand a response from the American armed forces. Both the Trump and Obama presidencies have stated that the Russian SRBM Iskande ballistic missile placed in Kalingrad had a longer range than declared and was against the INF treaty. Kalingrad is a region between Poland and Lithuania. ?Russia has claimed that this missile has a range of under 310 miles and is therefore under the INF treaty and allowed. ?The German government has demanded a response to this aggression, because Russia now has the potential to strike deep into Germany.

The Biden administration has stated that the invasion of Ukraine is a further provocation and that these deployed missiles are important to deter Russian aggression. It is thought that these missiles deployed in Germany can be utilized as leverage to compel the Russians to negotiate a reciprocal reduction of missile usage.

The U.S has placed missiles in West Germany in 1979. These missiles were designated as the U.S Pershing II medium-range nuclear ballistic missile. It was a direct result of the Soviets’ creation of the RSD-10 Pioneer missile which threatened West Germany and much of Central and Western Europe. The U.S under the George W. Bush presidency withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. In 2002 ?The ?U.S subsequently placed U.S anti-ballistic missile systems in Poland and the Czech Republic. The American government is also considering allowing British Storm Shadow cruise missiles which is facilitated by U.S military guidance to be deployed against Russia.

This missile situation in Europe is growing more and more serious. There is no valid anti-missile deployment treaty in the present situation which the U.S, NATO, or Russia feel obligated to follow. This deployment of missiles is the precarious start of an arms race that will upset the delicate balance of power in Europe. I would urge caution, but Russia must stand down in its aggression. There must be peace, but peace is made through strength and strength is facilitated by military deterrence.
