United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender equality @ Airtel – an introspection
Author: Shivani Maudgal Datta, VP ESG & Compliance Management, Bharti Airtel Limited
Recently, had the honour and privilege to participate as a member of the core committee[1]?and panelist at the 7th United Nations Global Compact Network India Gender Equality Summit 2024[2]?under the theme “Inclusive Horizons: Integrating Gender Equality across SDGs” on April 26th, 2024 at Delhi.?
In a lively and engaging session covering the theme of “Breaking Barriers: Technology, Innovation, and Inclusion for a Gender equal Future”, I introspected the power of our digital connect and how it is key to bridging the Societal, Distance, and Gender (SDG) divide. The panel discussion offered the opportunity to hear from senior industry colleagues. We each shared experiences of our corporate belief and engagement in promoting gender inclusion and equality.
Acknowledgment of the gendered society we are part of, and how it has financially impacted women’s employment and earning potential has already been brought out in the 2023 Nobel? winning economic research by Claudia Goldin[3].?
To beat the gender divide, and especially to attract STEM female talent, we have crafted programs like SheCodes[4]– a coding hackathon to motivate and identify young women engineers. We also offer mentored internships to young women engineering graduates, with employment at our engineering centers on completion. ?These efforts have resulted in improving the representation of women in STEM roles.
We understand education is a key enabler for bridging the social divide, and educational decisions made at a young age, dictate career over the lifetime. Thus, the Bharti Airtel Foundation[5] provides free quality education to underprivileged children with a special focus on girl child education, in rural pockets of India. The schools are equipped with technology driven set ups such as digital classes, robotic labs, Language? labs, tablabs, etc for encouraging STEM and enhanced learning. Girls, who comprise more than 51% of the student populace, are encouraged to take on leadership roles like class monitors to motivate and build confidence!?
By offering the power of digital connection to the remotest corners through affordable access to the internet and mobile, the telecom industry is indeed well positioned to address the social, distance,?gender?divide – a target covered under the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.?
The Outcome Report from the Gender Equality Summit 2024 is live and available here.
