UNHQ: - In a pivotal session held at the United Nations today, the United States exercised its veto power to block a Security Council resolution that would have sought "humanitarian pauses" for the delivery of lifesaving aid to millions in Gaza. The resolution encountered a stark division among the Council members.
The breakdown of the voting is as follows:
In Favor (12): Albania, Brazil, China, Ecuador, France, Gabon, Ghana, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland, UAE
Against (1): United States
Abstain (2): Russia, United Kingdom
The resolution, which was supported by a substantial majority of Council members, aimed to address the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza, where millions of vulnerable civilians have been enduring hardships due to ongoing conflicts. Regrettably, the United States' veto has prevented this resolution from moving forward.
This divisive vote underscores the challenges of achieving international consensus on pressing humanitarian issues. The United Nations remains committed to continuing discussions to find a resolution that can alleviate the suffering of those affected in Gaza.
