Black Child, Your Dreams are Valid.
This theme is crucial and holds immense significance in our society. Gender Based Violence (GBV) refers to any form of violence that is predominantly inflicted on individuals based on their gender, often targeting women and girls. It includes various forms such as domestic violence, sexual assault, harassment, and female genital mutilation, economic violence, among others.
Investing in preventing violence against GBV is essential for several reasons. Firstly, it is a matter of human rights. Everyone deserves to live a life free from violence and fear. By investing in preventive measures, we can create a society where individuals are respected, protected, and empowered, regardless of their gender.
Secondly, preventing GBV is not only morally right but also economically beneficial. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that violence against women costs countries billions of dollars annually in healthcare, legal expenses, and lost productivity. By investing in prevention, we can reduce these costs and allocate resources towards more productive endeavours, leading to overall economic growth.
Investing in prevention involves various strategies. Education plays a vital role, as it helps challenge harmful gender norms and stereotypes that perpetuate violence. By promoting gender equality and respect, we can cultivate a culture that condemns violence and promotes healthy relationships.
Adequate funding should be allocated to ensure the proper functioning of support services, such as helplines, counselling centres, and shelters.
Additionally, legislative measures are crucial in preventing GBV. Governments need to invest in creating and implementing comprehensive laws that criminalize violence and provide support for survivors. Adequate funding should be allocated to ensure the proper functioning of support services, such as helplines, counselling centers, and shelters. Adequate and accurate awareness to also be made on consequences, i.e., jail terms and fines for violence.

Investment in prevention also requires engaging men and boys as allies. By involving them in awareness campaigns and educational programs, we can challenge toxic masculinity and promote healthy, non-violent behaviours. Men and boys need to be part of the solution, as they play a significant role in ending GBV.
By tackling these underlying issues, we can create a more equitable society where violence against women and girls is less likely to occur.
Lastly, investing in prevention also means addressing the root causes of GBV, such as gender inequality, poverty, and lack of access to education and economic opportunities. By tackling these underlying issues, we can create a more equitable society where violence against women and girls is less likely to occur.
Violence prevention is a responsibility of us all. Period.
In conclusion, the theme of uniting to invest in preventing violence against GBV is crucial for building a safer, more equitable society. By investing in education, legislation, support services, and addressing the root causes of GBV, we can work towards eliminating violence and creating a world where everyone can live free from fear.
