Uniquely Yours, 001: "I Am Growing"

001: I Am Growing—Growing My Garden, My Business, and My SELF.

I used to have a black thumb. I literally killed every plant that set root in my house.?

I convinced myself that I would never be one of those people who would be able to grow anything, so I continued to live in awe of those who could, seeing it as magical, something I desired to do, but ‘not in my cards.’

And so because I believed I had a black thumb, I had a black thumb.?

We bought our house in October, 2021 and the backyard was filled with garden beds and blueberry bushes and all this beautiful flora, including lavender, echinacea, hydrangeas, etc. Because we were entering into the winter season, all I could do was dream about being a good caretaker for this gorgeous property, my black thumb be damned! Challenge accepted!?

Shortly after we settled into the house, I left my full time, comfy, six-figure job to spend all my time bringing my startup, FindUniquelyU.com to life.

Just as I believed I had a black thumb, I believed I didn’t think I was worthy to sit at the big kid’s table, so I sat at the little kid’s table in the kitchen dreaming of the day that I could have those magical founder qualities. I wore my first-time founder hat quite openly, using it almost as a crutch for all the missteps I made. (I even wrote a book about it! Check it out.)?

But just as I was determined to grow life in those dormant garden beds that had flourished for the previous homeowner (who was retired and had all the time in the world…where would I find the time? I was full of excuses), I was determined to birth FindUniquelyU.com into the world.

As spring woke up the many gifts in my gorgeous yard, little by little I slowly tended to my new garden. I knew nothing about gardening, but I started to seek advice, and I experimented.

My best friend Dana told me that the bunnies ate all her plants, so my husband Dave and I went to Home Depot and bought some cheap, low white picket fencing and green mesh to wrap around the garden beds.?

I then went to the organic farm and bought a whole bunch of starter seedlings and threw them all in the beds, and you know what? Almost all of them not only survived but THRIVED! I had more cherry tomatoes than a family could need. Green bell peppers, bush green beans, and herbs! Oh the fresh herbs! Rosemary, mint, basil, oregano! Romaine lettuce seemed to endlessly give to us. I reserved one bed for flowers, and anything that was uprooted around the yard or gifted to me was tossed in there.?

My first garden was so abundant, and it brought such a sense of accomplishment of having arrived at a place where I never thought I would belong!

Concurrently with spring into summer, we launched FindUniquelyU.com on June 26, 2022, and the love of the community and our team at that time filled my heart to the brim.?

Both my garden and my company nourished my soul and awakened a new part of me for which I am eternally grateful.?

With the coming of autumn here in NY, my green thumb continued to thrive with my house plants. I have a Peace Lily plant that I swear represents the abundance in my life. It has been giving me new flowers almost weekly since Christmas. And my Poinsettias? Still green as all heck and thriving in my kitchen!

I gained more confidence and experimented with growing from seeds, and I am the proud mamma of ginormous cherry tomato plants, bush beans, cucumber plants, and Zinnias. I believe they will all provide sustenance for my family.

Even the flowers around the property seem to be double the size of last year!?

Having made it through our first anniversary of the business, a couple pivots, and a LOT of trial and error, with confidence and ease of having been through the uncomfortable place of being new, I feel the business is on the verge of exploding just like my beautiful Garden of Eden.
