Lady Bird Johnson's Urban Beautification Project, part of her broader "Beautify America" campaign, made a lasting impact on cities across the U.S., including the Big Apple. This First Lady was all about greenery and flowers, and her influence is evident on Park Avenue, Manhattan's "Grand Boulevard". The project brought in funds and attention to spruce up public spaces with trees, shrubs, and seasonal blooms. It's not just eye candy; these additions boosted local morale and even property values. New Yorkers felt a sense of pride strolling down a more aesthetically pleasing Park Avenue, giving the city's high rollers and everyday folks alike a taste of nature amid their concrete homes. So, hats off to Lady Bird for giving NYC's Park Ave a touch of Southern charm and elegance.
The flower planting initiative on Park Avenue didn't just stop with Lady Bird; it's grown into a full-fledged horticultural affair. Various civic organizations and local businesses keep the tradition alive, swapping out seasonal blooms to make sure Park Ave remains a visual feast year-round. Tulips in the spring, geraniums in the summer—you get the picture.
As for the art, Park Avenue becomes an open-air gallery at various times throughout the year. Sculptures and installations from renowned artists pop up, giving commuters and pedestrians a dose of culture as they go about their day. Whether it's abstract metal structures or thought-provoking pieces, these installations engage the community and elevate the street's aesthetic. The artwork and flowers together make Park Avenue more than just a road; they make it an ever-evolving experience, a real New York City landmark
Recently, Park Ave hosted an unusual exhibit, as most of them are unusual, created by artist Willie Cole called the Soul Catcher. This incredible exhibit was on display on the Park Ave median at 69th-70th St. Four unique chandeliers made from 9,000 plastic bottles, added to the beauty of New York City and its uniqueness.
