Uniquely DC: The Transition Business
Despite the ongoing difficulties facing the region with COVID-19 and the struggling economy, one thing is certain: change. And every two, four and eight years, the business community region experiences something unique to our region—election aftermath. This typically is not political in nature; it simply is part of the business cycle of the DC metro area.
No matter whether an administration stays or changes, each election – particularly a presidential election – results in a turnover in some of the members of Congress, agencies, and departments as well as their supporting staff. These changes directly impact our local businesses and our area. And, as with any past election, many local companies now are working behind the scenes preparing for the transitions to come.
For our business, these changes mean helping people pack or unpack their homes or offices, store items, and move to or from another location. Over the years, we have moved presidents and their families, administration officials, members of Congress, diplomats and more. We offer all a high level of professionalism and commitment to protect their possessions and privacy.
In the process, we get glimpses into their lives and the workings of government. I remember when President Clinton enthralled our moving team by showing them his favorite music albums or when President Bush took time to thank each of our team members. I also recall our team helping a member of Congress set up their child’s bedroom to make it more welcoming and giving the child a place to play during the move. It’s these stories that humanize our powerful city and the people that work in it.
It is not just moving companies that are affected by the ebbs and flows of the nation’s election cycles. Realtors, painters, cable companies, title and escrow firms, mortgage brokers, stagers, cleaning firms, and home improvement companies are also working to help make life transitions smoother. Each industry that is part of the political machine that is Washington, DC has these stories like ours of the people who have come to serve our great nation.
Right now, all of these sectors are ramping up to make sure they can help make the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible. Given COVID-19, the challenge will be great to provide services, however area companies have adopted safety protocols that ensure the safety of employees and customers. These companies recognize that the functioning of the government is important and that local businesses have a role in making it operate well.
Even during a recession and pandemic, change shapes and contributes to our local economy. This year, elections may provide only a short-term opportunity, however, the ensuing orders will help tide many businesses over until the expected mid-year bump as people get vaccinated and businesses react by “going back” to work.
As the new year unfolds, I take pride in watching how our business community contributes to democracy. Government agencies and the companies that serve the government invariably change and businesses around the DMV ensure that these transitions go smoothly. It is part of helping our nation move forward. And it’s our job.
