A Unique Vision at Kefalos
Travel is about places, people, culture and history and occasionally you find a place where all elements come together. Last night, we were booked for dinner at a #Mylotopi above Kefalos on Kos and yes the food was wonderful and the service friendly and helpful, on top of which the view of Kefalos, alone, is worth the trip.
What we hadn’t expected was to be introduced to the vision of George Voudouris and his wife Georgia, who felt that history and heritage was being loss and they has concern that perhaps, a younger generation did not appreciate, how tough it had been just a few generations ago. George involved his own children in this journey, saying to them that, they all have their own room in a comfortable house but then set about explain his vision for a traditional house that brings to life how families lived in rural Greece in the 19th century, beautifully presenting how a three generations of a family would live in one room.
#Mylotopi is not just a restaurant it is a living museum, where a stone bread oven and a windmill, which includes timbers that are over 1000 years old have been lovingly restored to enable, the visitor, to appreciate 19th century village life but also to enjoy the tastes that are produced. The windmill produces the flour for the bread that is baked the stone oven several times a week, and there are vegetable and herb gardens providing fresh ingredients for use in the restaurant.
It was a pleasure to sit and talk with George and his family as well as Manolis, George’s superb manager who gave us a magical tour and it was clear that Manolis shares the vision and the passion of this very high quality destination.
The conversation and general ambience was so enjoyable that we stayed after the departure of our transfer back to our hotel, and when we said we would head back, Manolis very kindly took us back in his own car, we could not have asked for a more perfect evening.
