Unique Holiday Season Traditions from Around the World: From KFC in Japan to Roller-Skating in Venezuela
Webinar Re-Imaging LLMs, Best of 2024, ITAPA 2024?
For many, the holiday season can be busy—finding the perfect gifts for loved ones, navigating crowded stores, attending family gatherings while managing the endless to-do lists. But amidst the hustle and bustle, Holiday traditions vividly remind us of the wonders of this festive time around the world.?
Take Japan: Christmas for them isn’t complete without a trip to KFC. Yes, Kentucky Fried Chicken has become the holiday go-to for families and friends, with many reserving their fried chicken buckets several months in advance.
In Germany and Austria, the holiday spirit takes a darker turn, thanks to Krampus, St. Nicholas’s terrifying companion. Krampus roams the streets the night before the Feast of St. Nicholas, ?punishing naughty children with birch rods, while the well-behaved are rewarded with gifts and treats.
In Venezuela, celebrations have a unique twist: locals travel to church on rollerskates. From December 16th to 24th, Caracas, the capital, is closed each morning to make way for this beloved tradition.
Meanwhile, on Christmas Day, unmarried women in the Czech Republic have a quirky custom that involves throwing their shoes. The direction in which the shoe lands is said to predict whether the woman will marry in the coming year.
They are more mysterious in Norway, as families hide their brooms and mops on Christmas Eve to protect against witches and evil spirits.
Inevitably, roast turkey with all the trimmings may not be to everyone’s taste. In Greenland, the holiday table features delicacies like whale skin, while others love their auk—a small penguin-like bird, which is wrapped in seal skin and buried until it decomposes, before being served as a delicacy on 25th December.
No matter where you are or how you celebrate, on behalf of our CEO, Phil Winder, and our team of engineers, sales, marketing, content writers, and partners, we wish you a peaceful holiday season and a joyful New Year!
