Unions confirm port strike on July 4 and 5 in Italy

As of June 26, 2024, Italian transport unions and employers were planning to strike at ports across the country from July 2–5, 2024, due to failed contract negotiations. The strikes were expected to have a cumulative impact on port operations and shipping, and may cause significant delays in cargo handling.

The Uiltrasporti labor union planned to strike on July 2–3, 2024, and the FILT CGIL and FIT CISL unions planned to strike on July 4–5, 2024. The Uiltrasporti union also called for demonstrations from July 1–7, 2024, with workers possibly forming pickets at port entrances and regional administrative offices. In particular, unions warned that workers from the ports of Genoa, Savona, and La Spezia might lead a 48-hour strike on July 4–5, 2024, which could cause significant difficulties at those ports. Italian law protects workers' constitutional right to strike as a way to promote their?interests.
