Breaking Ground (NYC Permanent Supportive Housing)

In the season of Thanksgiving, we are fortunate to have amazing volunteers serve up festive meals to tenants at our permanent supportive housing sites. We have already had phenomenal help from Merlin Entertainment at the Brook, Medix at Boston Road and La Central, and Annaly Capital Management at the Christopher. We are just getting started with Thanksgiving so come back for seconds (and maybe thirds, fourths, and fifths)!

Yesterday, this great team of Breaking Grounders presented at Association for Community Living, Inc.'s ACLAIMH Conference on accommodating pets for tenants and clients in our permanent supportive apartments and transitional housing programs. Companion animals, pets, support animals, and service animals - our teams have seen it all and do everything possible to ensure that people and their pets can get and remain stable in housing for the long term. On October 10th, Breaking Ground held our annual Celebrating Home and Community Gala at The Glasshouse. This year's Gala highlighted the dire need for affordable housing and honored MetLife's Michel A, Khalaf and JPMorganChase's Douglas B. Petno - two organizations and individuals who have had a big impact on our work from the beginning. ??It's official - Sutphin Senior Housing & Clinic is topped off! ?? Built to Passive House standards, this 173-unit residence for seniors who are exiting or at risk of homelessness has come a long way since we broke ground in September of 2023. Thanks to our great partners Monadnock Construction, Inc. for showing us the amazing progress. Excited to share this milestone with our partners at Community Healthcare Network, who will operate a Federally Qualified Health Center on the ground floor and cellar levels! This week, the Breaking Ground Teen Board set up a clothing boutique at Park House, our all-affordable family residence in the Bronx. Park House is home to more than 200 children, and the boutique will be open all week for our young tenants to get new clothes and fresh looks. This week, a small but mighty group from AvalonBay Communities sorted, packed and distributed 150 grocery kits for our senior tenants at The Domenech in Brooklyn. Living on a fixed income is especially challenging in an era where food prices have risen so much so quickly, and this volunteer effort helps stretch our tenants' food budgets and ensure that no one goes hungry. ? Domenech tenants Wanda and Pedro were so appreciative, they asked to jump in this photo with the volunteer group! ? Thank you to #AvalonBay and the many corporate groups who have pitched in to help with food security this year. You are making a big difference for our seniors.
