UNILUS Debating Their Way to Hague

The University of Lusaka (UNILUS) Debate Team has once again demonstrated its prowess on the international stage, showcasing the intellectual acumen and eloquence that characterize Zambian Legal discourse. Competing in the prestigious The Hague Inter-University Law Debate Tournament (THIULDT) 2024, the team navigated through intense competition with finesse and determination, emerging in the top four worldwide. The team is additionally the first to qualify for the semi-finals of this debate tournament.
The dynamic trio consists of Tino Miti , Asiyatu Mdala , and Austin Bweendo Kachenga who are being coached by their Lecturer – Theresa Lumbama-Kaputo – and fellow Student – Nicole Bwanya .
The Hague Inter-University Law Debate Tournament started in 2015. It offers Students from across the globe an opportunity to debate on current legal topics and exchange experiences. The Students say: the major benefit they have gotten out of participating in this debate is finding out how people in different countries interpret legal problems. Students say, “The method of problem solving that we are taught to use at UNILUS translates to how we communicate our points effectively in these debates.”

The UNILUS Debate Team has won five rounds against their formidable opponents. These include: University of Western Ontario, University of the Republic of Uruguay, and Catholic University of Lille. Displaying exceptional skill and strategic thinking, the team secured victories in two matches, positioning themselves as frontrunners in their group.
Advancing to the knockout rounds, the team faced off against Tilburg University in the Round of 16 and University of Manchester in the Quarter Finals. The UNILUS Debate Team’s remarkable journey has not only put Zambia on the map in the global debate arena, but has also provided a platform for meaningful engagement with international legal institutions. As the team prepares for the semi-finals – and the possibility of competing in the finals – they are poised to continue making waves in The Hague of Netherlands next month.
Beyond the competitive arena, the team's participation in the tournament has afforded them unique opportunities to visit institutions such as the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as well as engage with ambassadors and dignitaries, further enriching their understanding of international law and diplomacy.
The University of Lusaka Debate Team's success underscores the university's commitment to academic excellence and the development of future leaders in law and public discourse. Their achievements serve as an inspiration to aspiring debaters across Zambia, highlighting the immense potential and talent within the country's academic community.
