Unified analytics with Chat GPT

Unified analytics with Chat GPT

Power BI is a popular data visualization and business intelligence tool that allows users to create interactive reports and dashboards. One of the challenges with using Power BI is writing DAX formulas for measures, especially for those who do not use the tool every day. This is where Chat GPT comes in.

Chat GPT is an AI chat bot that can be used within Power BI to assist with writing DAX formulas. It can help guide users on the structure of the formula and provide examples of functions and operators that can be used. Additionally, Chat GPT can write the full DAX formula for the measure based on the user's inputs.

Using Chat GPT with Power BI can save users a significant amount of time and improve productivity. Rather than spending time researching and writing DAX formulas, users can simply ask Chat GPT for assistance and receive a quick and accurate response. This integration of Power BI with Chat GPT shows the potential of AI to improve productivity and simplify complex tasks.

What is Chat GPT?

Chat GPT is an AI chatbot that's gaining popularity online. It offers exciting possibilities for today and tomorrow. With its natural language capabilities, you can use Chat GPT to work with Power BI and even write DAX formulas. Unlike other digital assistants, Chat GPT is trained on technical datasets, offering more detailed and useful responses.

Chat GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a chat bot developed by the Open AI organization. It's been trained on massive datasets and allows to ask questions in natural language and receive a response.

The questions and responses are much more detailed and useful than would get from asking a digital assistant like Siri or Alexa. A major differentiator of Chat GPT is that it was trained using technical datasets and includes the ability to write Power BI DAX formulas!

Usage of Chat GPT in Power-BI

Chat GPT can be a valuable tool for Power BI users, particularly for those who are not as experienced with writing custom DAX formulas or SQL queries. It saves time and improves the quality of the reports by aiding with custom DAX formulas and SQL queries.

  • Using Chat GPT to Write DAX Formulas

For those who are not regular Power BI users or rely on Quick Measures, writing DAX formulas off the top of your head may not be easy. Chat GPT can assist you by generating DAX formulas based on the information you provide or guiding you through a template for your formula.

  • Using Chat GPT to write Power Query Formulas

Depending on your starting data set this can be a gigantic time saver. When using the Query editor in Power BI, there is an Advanced Editor that lets you edit the code of queries being generated step by step from the Query Editor.

Chat GPT can be a time saver in Power BI by assisting with the creation and editing of queries through the Advanced Editor. While it may be difficult to fully describe a process in text for Chat GPT to accurately transform, there is potential for future development where Excel files could be imported, and Power BI could suggest data transformations.

  • Using Chat GPT to write SQL Queries

Chat GPT can be a helpful tool when it comes to generating SQL queries for Power BI reports. Simply provide the relevant field names and Chat GPT will translate your natural language input into SQL code.

SQL queries are particularly useful when you're setting up a Direct Query connection to a SQL database. However, some queries can be very slow to run, which can impact the performance of your Power BI report. In these cases, you can try typing your SQL query into Chat GPT and asking for suggestions on how to optimize it. Chat GPT may be able to provide guidance on how to rewrite the query to improve its performance.

Overall, using Chat GPT in Power BI can be a huge time saver. It can help you quickly generate DAX formulas, write SQL queries, and optimize your queries for improved performance. With the ability to take natural language inputs and translate them into code, Chat GPT can make it easier for non-technical users to work with Power BI and unlock the full potential of their data.

  • ?Using Chat GPT as a Guide to Integrate Power Automate and Power BI

Integrating Power BI and Power Automate can be a powerful way to automate workflows and create custom alerts based on data in your Power BI reports Using Chat GPT as a Power BI dashboard development tool can save you a lot of time and effort. You can ask hypothetical questions and get quick answers to point you in the right direction. For example, you could ask "How can I add a slicer to filter data in my report?" or "What's the best way to create a custom visual in Power BI?" and Chat GPT can provide you with guidance on the steps to take.

However, if you need more detailed instructions or prefer video format training, the Guy in a Cube blog on YouTube is highly recommended. The Guy in a Cube blog is an excellent resource for Power BI training and provides detailed, step-by-step instructions on a wide range of topics. - Guy in a Cube YouTube channel

In addition to using Chat GPT and the Guy in a Cube blog, there are many other resources available online to help you learn and improve your Power BI skills. These include online courses, tutorials, blogs, forums, and more. Using Chat GPT as a Power BI dashboard development tool can save you a lot of time and effort. You can ask hypothetical questions and get quick answers to point you in the right direction. For example, you could ask "How can I add a slicer to filter data in my report?" or "What's the best way to create a custom visual in Power BI?" and Chat GPT can provide you with guidance on the steps to take.

  • Chat GPT could eliminate the need to write formulas and understand DAX

We know that Chat GPT can be used to write DAX formulas. Microsoft has already made it easier for users to create DAX formulas with the introduction of Quick Measures. Quick Measures are pre-built, commonly used DAX formulas that can be easily applied to your data with a few clicks. However, there are still some complex scenarios where custom DAX formulas are required to achieve specific business logic.

As for using Chat GPT to write DAX formulas, it's an interesting concept and there is potential for this type of functionality in the future. Currently, Chat GPT is not integrated into Power BI in this way, but Microsoft is always looking for ways to improve the user experience and streamline the development process. It's possible that in the future, natural language processing capabilities could be used to help users generate DAX formulas by asking questions or providing context about their data.

  • ?Chat GPT could enable users to ask meaning questions about their data.

Microsoft has already introduced a feature in Power BI that allows users to ask questions and get answers. If you've ever tried to set it up, you'll find that it can be a lot of work. The questions must manually trained and managed making it almost more trouble than it's worth. A Chat GPT style solution would eliminate the need for a lot of manual training. You may even be able to set something up where the chat bot answers simple questions then refers a user to a person if it's not confident in an answer.

Once integrated, Chat GPT is going to be the future of data analysis, enabling business users to ask questions about data and get insightful answers with the added benefit of being able to ask clarifying questions and follow-up questions without having to reach out to an analyst for further information.

Quick Measure Suggestions is a powerful feature that can save time and effort in creating DAX formulas for Power BI. To enable it, go to the Options menu in Power BI Desktop and select the Preview Features section. From there, enable Quick Measure Suggestions.

However, to fully use this feature, you may also need to enable live Q&A on the Power BI dataset through the Power BI Service. This may require enabling Natural Language Processing in the admin settings of the Power BI Service. Note that this feature may not be available in all regions.

Once enabled, you can describe the DAX formula needed and Power BI will generate suggestions for you. This can be particularly useful for users who are not as familiar with DAX formulas, as it can provide a starting point or inspiration for creating more complex measures.
