Unicorns!

Unicorns!

If we’re being honest, the truth is none of us have “arrived” in the sense that we are the best version of ourselves.?Even if it appears you have everything put together and running on all cylinders, the reality is that your heart knows better.?We all desire to improve areas of perceived shortcomings.?Nobody knows you better than you.?What do you want to improve??Being healthy??More proficient at work??A better parent or spouse??The possibilities are endless.

But how do we get there??Where do you start??If it is important to you, you are going to have to do something about it and that something is going to involve work.?Check.?Start of story.

The rocket fuel to change is having a mentor.?A mentor is defined as an experienced and trusted advisor.?It is NOT defined by age, social status, or title. ?It sounds simple.?We can throw a rock in any direction and find people capable of advising us but there is a 3rd piece to the puzzle.?That person must be WILLING to invest in your development.?Finding THAT person is like finding a unicorn!

I thought of my mentor Deb Gallagher.?I was fortunate to meet Deb during training for a new role and immediately thought there was something different about her.?She was someone I wanted to spend time with (another important characteristic of a mentor).?She is funny, doesn’t take herself too seriously or worry about the “right” way to say something.?She also happens to be brilliant at what she was good at.?What she was good at is writing.

She has helped me improve tremendously in how effective I am at communicating in the written word.?Communication in any form is key in this isolated world.?With all the emails, instant messages, and texts I send these days, Deb helps me get my message across. ?I would encourage all of us to actively seek out a mentor that can sure up any shortcoming.?Find that Unicorn and put in the work to getting better.
