Unicorn vs. Zebra: clash of Business philosophies

Unicorn vs. Zebra: clash of Business philosophies

In a vast plain where ideas bloom like wildflowers, the Unicorn and the Zebra found themselves by a shared watering hole at the twilight of a hectic day. The Unicorn, with a sparkling aura of success and rapid growth, approached the water with a grace that spoke of billion-dollar valuations and rapid expansions. The Zebra, marked distinctly by its black and white stripes, moved with a deliberate and thoughtful grace, embodying a philosophy of sustainability and community enrichment.

Unicorn (with a tone of excitement and pride): Hello Zebra, standing so composed and serene. Why limit yourself to this small patch of grass when there are boundless fields to conquer? Why not join the race to the horizons where fame and fortune await?

Zebra (peacefully): Hello Unicorn. It’s true, the horizons are appealing, but the strength of a life lies in its roots. I thrive on the balance - nurturing the land that feeds us. Growth for me isn’t measured just by spread, but by depth and sustainability. What is the value of vast fields if they grow barren from our hurry?

Unicorn (curious): But don’t you see? The pace of our growth brings innovation and prosperity! We move fast, creating new markets, new technologies, always pushing forward. This is the way of the unicorn - chasing what has never been done.

Zebra (thoughtfully): Innovation is vital, but how we innovate matters. Our approach considers not just the economic output, but also the ecological and social inputs. True prosperity supports all stakeholders - employees, customers, communities, and the environment. It's a holistic vision, Unicorn. Isn’t lasting impact better than fleeting success?

Unicorn: I see your point, Zebra, but our investors expect quick returns. We are driven by market forces to deliver shareholder value, to scale up fast, to be first. This linear drive is what makes us unicorns.

Zebra (nodding): I understand the pressure, but consider this: a business can be both competitive and cooperative. By focusing on stakeholder value rather than just shareholder value, we create a network of support. Our growth is synergistic, where success is shared and thus more resilient. Isn’t a supportive network stronger than standing alone?

Unicorn (pondering): Synergistic, you say? Our paths are indeed driven by different forces. We often stand alone, celebrated for our independence and singular achievements. But tell me more, how does this network of yours work in practice?

Zebra: It’s about connections and mutual benefits. For instance, when we expand, we look for ways our business can help local enterprises grow. We invest in community programs that enhance education and health, which in turn nurtures a workforce that is skilled and loyal. Our business becomes a node in a larger ecosystem, not just a solitary entity pushing through the wilderness.

Unicorn (intrigued): It sounds comprehensive, but complex. How do you manage the slower pace of growth and still satisfy your investors?

Zebra: Our investors are partners in our vision. They understand that by building a business that is integral to its community and environment, we ensure long-term viability. Our returns may not spike as quickly as yours, but they sustain and grow over time. Plus, our way reduces risks associated with market fluctuations and social upheavals.

Unicorn: Risk reduction, long-term growth, community integration... You present a compelling case, Zebra. But in a world that celebrates the fastest and the most flamboyant, is there really space for your approach?

Zebra: More than you might think, Unicorn. As the world faces environmental and social challenges, the principles of regenerative business are becoming more attractive. We're not just surviving; we're thriving by contributing positively. Our model might soon be the norm rather than the exception.

Unicorn (reflectively): This dialogue has opened my eyes, Zebra. Perhaps there is wisdom in your measured pace and integrative strategies. Maybe there’s a middle path that combines our strengths - a hybrid model that captures the unicorn’s speed and the zebra’s depth.

Zebra: I believe so, Unicorn. Imagine a business landscape where speed does not sacrifice depth, where innovation includes regeneration, and where competition breeds cooperation. That's a world where both of us can thrive.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, spreading a golden radiance across the plain, the Unicorn and the Zebra continued their conversation. Each absorbed in thoughts of how a blend of their philosophies might create not just a successful business, but a sustainable and flourishing ecosystem. Their dialogue at the watering hole became a symbol of potential harmony between the mystical aspirations of unicorns and the grounded resilience of zebras, pointing toward a future where business transcends profit to embrace purpose.

I’d like to invite us all to ask: how would a zebra look at the world? How would they lead? How would they decide? How would they feel? I’m ever so grateful to have come across the zebra concept 4 years ago. It has changed my understanding of what a startup could be.

"Our growth is synergistic, where success is shared and thus more resilient" Synergy is probably the most undervalued human need in the present and probably the most important one nowadays. It is the one that links consciousness with life for not breaking the cycle in the human map.
