Blue Earth summit updates
Blue Earth was the usual mix of platforming innovations, startups seeking to disrupt and businesses that are leading the way. The challenge was that we didn’t see as many really exciting updates and progress coming directly from the business community as we had hoped, particularly from outside of the most progressive businesses.??
Although already a well told story it was interesting to hear from the Tony’s Chocolonely CEO, Douglas Lamont.? He spoke at length about the work they are doing through Open Chain and their strategy for sector-wide impact.? Notably he spoke about supplying Waitrose’s own label cocoa, creating a situation in which they are ‘collaborating on supply and competing on shelf.’? This puts retailers in an interesting position with heritage brands who aren’t demonstrating their supply chain credentials, given they are competing for shelf real estate at one end with a brand in Tony’s that is growing at 35% a year and at the other end their own brand chocolate also carrying supply credentials at the other.? The expectation will be that the middle shelf space for the incumbents will get crowded out, emphasising the potential for business to ‘raise the ceiling and then we just need governments to raise the floor.’

We finished our time at Blue Earth hearing from Clover Hogan about her personal journey leading Force of Nature and the impact this has as a young activist.? We would urge anyone that hasn’t heard Clover speak or seen the work of Force of Nature to check them out - www.forceofnature.xyz/history??
We came away feeling energised and hopeful, but at the same time struck by the fact that there remains a big hole in the sector for more leadership education and engagement.? It isn’t the role of a Blue Earth to do that but we do need to find many more opportunities to bring leaders into the space, helping them to understand and identify the challenges and the opportunities that come with decarbonisation.

Mars announces new regenerative farming commitments
Mars announced significant regenerative agriculture financial commitments last year and they have just followed that up with a commitment to transition 150,000 acres of land for their pet food supply chain to regenerative practices in 2024.? Their aim is to get to 1 million acres across North America by 2030 as part of their scope 3 emission reduction plan.? The new initiative aims to, ‘[support farmers] in implementing regenerative agriculture practices including cover crops, reduced tillage, and extended crop rotations, with an aim to deliver benefits such as increased yields, lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through reduction and carbon sequestration, improved water quality, enhanced soil health, and greater biodiversity in the implementation regions.’? Given the scale that Mars brings, the potential for sector-wide impact is significant.??
